Full Job Description
North Tyneside's model of development for newly qualified social workers is to start their career within a Child in Need Team, working initially with children and young people subject to child in need plans, and then progressing to working with children subject to child protection plans and children who are in our care, in line with ASYE guidelines.
There is already one Child in Need team within the Safe and Supported Service. The Team Manager will be supported by our newly established Practice Manager role which is a non case holding post who will work closely with the Team Manager to model Signs of Safety practice, support newly qualified workers including joint working, and support the Team Manager.
The Team will also have a Family Support worker.
The Safe and Supported Service work with children and families where there is longer term involvement under Child in Need Plans, Child Protection Plans and within public and private Court proceedings. Safe and Supported Teams support children until final plans of permanence are agreed. For children/ young people with a plan of permanence outside the family via long term fostering or long term residential care, Safe and Supported Team will support a transfer to the Cared For Teams. Safe and Supported Team work with children with a plan of adoption until Adoption Orders are granted.
You will be responsible for the overall management and development of the Team, ensuring that social work practice follows the Signs of Safety model, supporting newly qualified workers through their ASYE and contributing to the overall performance and development of the Team and Service.
You will be a qualified social worker with at least 5 years experience in statutory social work in one or more of the following areas: child in need plans, child protection assessments and plans, and children in the care of the local authority. You will have experience of supporting students and newly qualified social workers. You will also have experience of working in partnership - with children, their family and wider networks, and professional colleagues across education, health, police and the voluntary sector.
It is important that you have excellent written skills, and are proficient in using IT. We will provide you with devices and equipment that promotes flexibility in how you work, and training in LCS, our electronic child record system.
North Tyneside Children's Social Care is considered to be Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted. We want the best for our children and families, and would encourage you to join us in our commitment to continuously delivering the services that make a difference to children and young people.
In January 2025 Ofsted stated that
"An unquestionable strength in North Tyneside is that leaders have created a culture where social workers can safely practice and do their best for children. This authentic approach by leaders and valued investment in the workforce mean that staff want to stay and make a positive difference to children's lives"
Safeguarding intervention is challenging, and we want to make sure our staff feel safe in their practice.
In our 2024 Health Check, 100% of colleagues told us that they felt their line manager cared about their welfare. We encourage peer support from within your team. You will have access to regular group supervision. Senior managers are visible and accessible so you know you are never alone in the work that you do with children, young people and families.
We have a range of resources and support in place to ensure our staff have a healthy work life balance. These include flexible and agile working arrangements, generous annual leave entitlement and access to fantastic money saving offers across the region.
The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 and an Enhanced DBS disclosure, including Barred List Check, will be required.
