Full Job Description
Are you looking to apply your project management skills to optimise processes and encourage transformative changes across a team-centric organisation?, Reporting to the Head of Portfolio Management Office, you will work collaboratively across the Directorate and with other SMG colleagues to build on existing processes and documentation to enhance project management capability. You will also coordinate assurance activities and enable continuous learning to improve confidence in delivering projects successfully. You'll be joining a collaborative and supportive project delivery team including Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, and working alongside another PMO Officer based in London. The team works closely together to ensure the smooth delivery of a wide range of projects, sharing knowledge and supporting each other's development. This is a 24-month fixed term contract. We offer flexibility around working hours - 21 to 35 hours per week - and you will be working them across Monday to Friday. Hybrid working is available in this role in line with the current hybrid working policy at Science Museum Group. Specific working arrangements will be agreed with the line manager of this role.
We're keen to see applications from candidates with direct experience managing or supporting projects in complex environments, particularly those with a solid grasp of technical aspects of end-to-end project delivery. A background in project or programme management, either through formal qualifications or practical experience in structured programme settings, is important, as is the ability to design, develop, and improve processes as part of change projects. You'll be adept at working with a wide range of stakeholders, from senior leaders to operational teams, and bring solid communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with project governance frameworks, assurance activities, and PMO functions would be highly beneficial, though not essential. Experience in construction-related projects is also a plus, but not essential. Most importantly, we're looking for people who are values-driven, experienced in challenging situations, and motivated to contribute to an open, inclusive, and continuously improving organisation.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) operates one of the largest, most complex and iconic science-based estates in the world, incorporating the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon, the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, and the Science + Innovation Park in Wroughton. We welcome over 5 million visitors a year and house 7.3 million items, and we have an ambitious and exciting investment programme to transform our sites to enhance the visitor experience and ensure our collection is protected for generations to come. The Masterplan department leads the development of the long-term vision for each of the Group's sites, in collaboration with each of the Museum's Directors. The department delivers built environment projects which collectively work towards thar vision including new permanent galleries, collections stores, infrastructure, fabric, public realm and facilities projects. The size of the capital portfolio has increased hugely, with over £200m of capital work in train across all the organisation's sites. We are seeking an individual to support with the ensuring consistent and effective project management practices are established and embedded across the portfolio., Working with a world-leading museum group that offers access to truly unique environments and collections, you'll benefit from the perks listed below, as well as full support for life events such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.
- Meaningful work. We're a mission-led organisation where the work you do supports us in Inspiring Futures.
- Career growth. We offer enhanced support with personal and professional development.
- Work/life balance. We offer 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays, along with flexible policies which support you and your home life.
- Health & Dental Insurance. Extra peace of mind, from day one.
- Wellbeing. All our colleagues can access an employee assistance programme, access to the Unmind app, and other wellbeing support.
- Colleague networks. Our colleague-led networks are an informal forum for colleagues to come together to discuss topics of shared interest and lived experience. They create a space for people to exchange ideas, discuss best practice, socialise and build a sense of community.
- Enhanced contributory pension. To support you in saving for the future.
- Interest-free loans. When you need a little extra cash for life events or home improvements.
- Great discounts. Free entry to exhibitions, discounts in our shops, cafes, and access to other museums in the NMDC network. Open for All is one of the Science Museum Group's five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to develop a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge, and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation, capable to continue to Inspire Futures.
The role will be based contractually at one of the Science Museum Group national sites, although it will have a Group-wide remit, so some limited travel to other sites is possible. We offer a base salary of £41,330 per annum for colleagues based in London, and £37,600 per annum for colleagues based outside of London.
