The purpose of this post is to support delivery of large fisheries programmes through the collection of high-quality evidence. A key role to support the otolith processing team with technical work within the otolith lab.  Other duties may also include age determination, database inputting, biological sampling of finfish and shellfish and with the potential to take part in fisheries research surveys aboard our Research Vessel Cefas Endeavour.  Some archiving duties and contribution to other corporate projects may also be required.

 

Main duties will include:

  • Otolith processing and age determination

  • Data entry into Cefas databases.

  • Health and safety compliance in office, lab and fieldwork.

  • Potential fieldwork both on and off shore.

  • Archiving otolith samples and contribution to corporate programmes as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Academic qualifications required for direct entry to CEFAS Pay Band 3 are 2 A levels or equivalent (e.g. BTEC or NVQ level 3) including a science subject and some relevant work experience. 

In addition, you will need the following skills and experience:

  • Excellent attention to detail and methodical approach.

  • Excellent communication skills and experience of working as part of a team

  • Ability to accurately follow detailed procedures and instructions.

  • Flexible and proactive approach to work methods and duties;

  • Experience in compliance with lab health and safety practices
