Job ref: 4b5e345c74f74e899dbafc01f2247de6
Full Job Description
This is an exciting time to join Special Collections as we extend our support for student learning and academic teaching, following a recent move to our Holloway Road campus. Located in the Learning Centre, our Reading Room also welcomes external researchers.
Special Collections is part of our Library Services and includes archives, rare books, and historic objects that span over 350 years. The main collections, which comprise our University Archive, The Archive of the Irish in Britain, the Trades Union Congress Library collections and Frederick Parker Archive, range in format from personal letters to oral history and photographs.
Trades Union Congress Library Collections:
The TUC Library is the major research library for the study of all aspects of trade unions, collective bargaining and labour history, with both historical and contemporary coverage. The core areas of the collection are the publications of the TUC since its foundation in 1868, reference and historical works on the labour and trade union movement, union publications from the UK and overseas, and documents relating to working conditions and industrial relations in various industries. The collections also contain material collected from the wide-ranging campaigns and policy areas in which the TUC has been involved over the course of its history, including social policy areas such as health, housing, education, unemployment and social security.
The TUC Library also contains significant archive collections, including the records of the Workers' Educational Association, the Labour Research Department and the personal papers of Gertrude Tuckwell (1861-1951) and Marjorie Nicholson (1914-1997).
The Role:
For this role we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Library or Archive professional to manage, maintain and develop the TUC Collections on behalf of the University and the TUC.
You will liaise with the University's Schools and the TUC to promote the collections to students, academic staff, and external researchers. You will collaborate with community partners and other relevant bodies, supervise staff and volunteers, secure external funding for projects and contribute to supporting the delivery of the wider Special Collections service.
Due to the nature of the job, this role is 'campus first' in which staff are normally required to spend all or most of their time working on campus. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
Disability Confident
About Disability Confident
A Disability Confident employer will generally offer an interview to any applicant that declares they have a disability and meets the minimum criteria for the job as defined by the employer. It is important to note that in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. Transforming lives through excellent education
London Met is an extraordinary institution. Equity and social inclusion have always been our driving principles, and it's what makes the University so unique. Our organisation is distinctive, both in its eclectic and diverse community of students and staff, and also for its historical role in serving some of London's most deprived boroughs. Everything we do is underpinned by our philosophy that an individual should have the opportunity to transform their life through the power of education.
Equipping our students with the tools for their future is at the heart of our academic offering. We pride ourselves on providing our students with access to a wealth of opportunities and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute their unique perspectives to society, culture, public service and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and around the world.
