Full Job Description
We have a fantastic and unique opportunity for a talented gardener to join us for an 18-month Gardener Scholarship at Sissinghurst. Under the guidance of Head Gardener Troy Smith and his team, you'll gain practical hands-on experience in the art and craft of horticulture. There'll be a particular focus on the approach of the garden's founders whilst also seeking to innovate and welcome fresh ideas. The scholarship will give you a deeper understanding of topics including soil management, rose pruning, garden design, hedge care and plant health, with flexibility to focus on particular areas of interest. In addition to these specialist skills, this opportunity will also provide you with essential skills in management, leadership, project management and working with the media, topics not traditionally taught as part of typical horticulture courses. This scholarship has been designed to help prepare high performing Gardeners to be ready to take on a Head Gardener position. What it's like to work here Sissinghurst is a highly personal garden planned by two people whose artistry was matched by their plant knowledge and who had an individual point of view. To perpetuate a garden made by two such individuals requires gardeners not only with supreme horticultural knowledge and skill but also gardeners with vision, sensitivity and most importantly an instinctive feeling for the spirit of the place.
- qualified RHS level 2 or equivalent
- a horticulturist and hands-on gardener, with experience in hard landscaping
- knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail
- experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance
- confident in talking to a variety of people and building positive relationships quickly
- able to work within a team of colleagues and volunteers as well as on your own
- able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
There's no other organisation like the National Trust. No other organisation that brings such an amazing variety of places and spaces to life. We are a charity founded in 1895 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, three people who saw the importance of our nation's heritage and open spaces, and wanted to protect them for everyone to enjoy. More than a century after we were founded, our values are still at the heart of everything we do. And we do a lot more than you might think. We welcome some 22.5 million visitors, from all ages and backgrounds, every year. We care for historic houses, gardens, mills, forests, castles, miles of coastline, islands, holiday cottages, pubs and inns, whole villages and even a goldmine. We also run a huge retail chain, a multi-million pound food and beverage business and much, much more. And we do all of this so that everyone can enjoy and make the most of the green spaces and beautiful places that England, Wales and Northern Ireland has to offer. The National Trust is described by its employee gardeners as "dynamic, supportive, inquisitive and fun", where its beautiful places "lift your spirits naturally" and "somewhere you can expand new skills". The organisation is currently recruiting for a number of gardening roles. - Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
- Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
- Rental deposit loan scheme
- Season ticket loan
- EV car lease scheme
- Perks at work discounts such as gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts
- Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria.
- Flexible working whenever possible
- Employee assistance programme
- Free parking at most Trust places
The package The National Trust has the motto 'For everyone, for ever' at its heart. We're working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It's important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we're for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
