Full Job Description
Required: September 2025 Line Manager: Director of Drama Salary: £13,615 per annum Hours: Part-Time (25 hours per week), Term-Time Only Contract Term: Fixed Term (1 Year) Closing date: Monday 23rd June, 12:00 noon Interview date: Tuesday 1st July The Role We are seeking a passionate and creative individual with a flair for the performing arts to join The King's School, Gloucester as Performing Arts Technician. In overseeing sound, lighting and AV support, you will play a vital role in bringing the arts to life at one of the country's leading HMC Independent Schools, including concerts of all styles and sizes, powerful drama productions and musicals across both the Junior and Senior Schools. The successful candidate must thrive in a highly creative and collaborative environment; you will work closely with the Directors of Music and Drama, teaching staff from Music, Drama, Dance and Art, and the IT team to continue and further develop the excellent performing arts provision at King's. The School The King's School is one of the dozen oldest schools in the country and has a proud heritage dating back to at least 1087, with a re-foundation in 1541. King's is the Cathedral School in the city of Gloucester, whilst the surrounding county is home to many excellent grammar and state schools, as well as other independent schools. King's is held in high regard amidst this competitive area; our academic, co-curricular and pastoral attainment is second to none. As a result, the last three ISI reports for King's have all been classified as 'excellent' in every area. Local media brand SoGlos has awarded King's the title of 'Independent School of the Year' or 'Highly Commended' in every one of the last six years - a feat unmatched by any other local independent school - most recently winning the title in May 2025. Despite the multiple national-scale challenges of recent years, King's has seen its pupil roll growing steadily and parental satisfaction scoring very highly indeed. With careful investment in the campus and facilities, as well as a continuous focus on improving teaching and learning and developing our outstanding pastoral care, King's is now seen as a dynamic, forward-thinking and impressive place to study and to work. Main Purpose
- To support the Directors of Music and Drama in achieving high-quality teaching, learning and performances across the Junior and Senior Schools;
- To manage the technical aspects of events which fall outside the remit of IT;
- To establish a knowledge base in School and mentor students. Key Duties
- Manage the School's various performing arts spaces such as the Black Box Theatre, Coach House, Finch's Hall, Mission Hall and Ivor Gurney Hall, and ensure spaces are lesson-ready after events;
- Take a proactive and hands-on approach to all aspects of sound and lighting equipment including set-up, operation and scheduled maintenance;
- Provide audio visual and lighting expertise for all performances and events across the School, and advise on the School's technical specification;
- Provide support for GCSE and A-Level Drama and Music lessons, exam rehearsals and performances;
- Produce and edit backing tracks as required by the Performing Arts Departments;
- Support and supervise technical candidates for GCSE and A-Level Drama;
- Lead on recording, editing and digitally producing recordings of all Music and Drama performances and examinations;
- Lead on the technical and organisational elements of Senior and KS3 productions, House Drama, House Music, and key events such as the Festival of Carols, Nativity, concerts and recitals;
- Manage and maintain wider resources and equipment in Drama, keeping wardrobe and technical areas tidy and ordering stock items as required;
- Provide admin support to the Drama department and contribute to co-curricular Drama, including trip attendance as required;
- Any other duties that may reasonably be assigned by the Directors of Music and Drama, Assistant Head Co-curricular or Headmaster. Personal Profile
- Creative flair and a passion for the performing arts;
- Experience of sound, lighting, AV and stage management;
- Able to work calmly under pressure, plan and prioritise own workload and remain professional at all times;
- Capable of showing initiative, including the ability to think ahead and work flexibly according to the needs of School events;
- Excellent communication skills, able to build relationships with both staff and pupils, and work collaboratively with others;
- Exceptional creativity, enthusiasm, commitment and energy;
- Outstanding organisational skills with a meticulous eye for detail. Hours of Work The post is for 25 hour per week, term-time only plus two weeks during the published School holidays as agreed with the Directors of Music and Drama. Hours will be flexible during busy periods of the year, e.g. to accommodate evening performances, and there will also be approx. 12 weekend rehearsals annually. Remuneration will be given for all weekend rehearsals (CRP), and any additional hours that may be required. Benefits
- A contributory pension through Aviva APTIS;
- Generous fee remission for children at King's;
- Before / After School Care for children at King's;
- Access to a Doctor for advice and short consultations;
- Staff Wellbeing Programme;
- Cycle to Work Scheme;
- Lunches;
- Parking. Applications Candidates should apply through Tes or by sending a completed School Application Form and Covering Letter via email to recruitment@thekingsschool.co.uk. A CV is not required. Closing date for applications is Monday 23rd June at 12:00 noon, with interviews taking place on Tuesday 1st July. However, early applications are encouraged and we reserve the right to make an appointment prior to the published closing date, if appropriate.
