Job ref: 2b56ea1286074149be0ae03d1c99fd46

Full Job Description

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, motivated and competent Private Sector Housing Practitioner to deliver a range of grants in line with our statutory obligations as part of our friendly Public Health and Housing Options service.

The focus of the role will specifically be to deliver our mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant (DFGs) and approved additional (Regulatory Reform Order) Housing Assistance Grants under our Housing Act responsibilities and the innovative MDDC Housing Assistance Policy. This includes stair lifts, bathroom adaptations and home repairs alongside Warm-Up and Home Start grants and working with our leading Home Improvement Loans provider.

The post holder will be required to inspect premises and assess suitability of property for adaptation in respect of DFGs; to prepare schedules, specifications and sketch plans as required, and to advise on planning and/or building regulation involvement.

The post holder will also advise on assistance packages and products including test of resources, preparing schedules, assisting with application forms and preparing legal papers for consideration under housing assistance grants and loans.

Relevant knowledge and experience of working with vulnerable customers is therefore essential, as is an understanding of buildings and construction.

The role may at times provide additional cover in the event of other urgent private sector housing standards interventions across the team and therefore knowledge and experience of the Housing Health and Safety Rating Scheme (HHRSS) is preferred. The post holder should therefore be competent in drafting notices and providing remedial advice to Landlords and tenants as well as knowledge of dealing with urgent situations using emergency housing act powers.

You will be committed to putting our customers first and providing high quality services and you will be required you to engage with a wide range of customers and service providers, delivering effective advice and guidance on the whole range grants available.

A key part of the role will be an understanding of safeguarding and an awareness of the procedures relating to this. You will also need to be able to sign post customers to a range of services such as the benefits system, social care and any other grant schemes provided by other organisations.

You will be a team player but also able to confidently work alone, who is prepared to face a variety of challenges and wants to make a difference by improving the health and wellbeing of our community.

Computer literacy is essential and a working knowledge of IDOX Uniform is desirable (though training can be provided).

A full, clean driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential as travel is required throughout our area.
