Job ref: 82dfc30cfd8149c28d46438565c83ca7

Full Job Description

As a Historic Environment Officer in the Design & Conservation Team you will be responsible for providing professional input and advice to planning officers, colleagues, elected members and customers on historic environment matters.

You will work with the wider Development Management team on projects of all scales, contributing to the assessment and determination of planning applications, providing pre-application advice and attending planning committee and appeals. You will also work with Strategic Planning on the research and preparation of policies and guidance for the Local Plan.

You will help to navigate the teams through complex policy and legislative frameworks, advising on matters including Listed Buildings, conservation areas, non-designated heritage assets and archaeology. You will also play a key role in maintaining and updating the revitalised historic environment record, local lists and conservation area character appraisals.

The position could suit candidates with a range of skills and experience. For appointment at the higher grade (H) you will be expected to be a fully qualified chartered professional with some years' experience in dealing with complex historic environment matters through the planning process. For appointment at the lower grades (E-F) you could be someone newly qualified and/or with a few years relevant experience, who has the desire to further their career by gaining hands-on experience in a planning context.

You should have a strong desire to work as part of a multi-discipline team, to collaborate and find solutions. We particularly welcome applications from historic building conservation specialists to complement the existing skills within the team., As part of our commitment to promoting equality we offer guaranteed interviews to those who meet the essential criteria and are considered disabled, care experienced or are an Armed Forces Service Leaver within the last two years.

We have a dedicated Design and Conservation team that provides an integrated approach to specialist advice to the planning service. The team brings together urban design, historic and natural environment disciplines to help shape places for the better, tackle climate change and deliver our city's bold growth ambitions.

By joining Plymouth City Council, you will not only become a key part of our multi-award-winning planning service, but you can also enjoy an amazing quality of life in Britain's Ocean City with close access to local beaches, countryside and Dartmoor National Park.

The opportunity

Plymouth is extremely rich in heritage assets: from unique 20th century architecture and city planning to historically significant military installations and medieval streets and harbours. We have 15 conservation areas, hundreds of listed buildings and a wealth of Scheduled Monuments and Registered Parks and Gardens. The layering of historic settlements around our multiple natural harbours also make Plymouth a fascinating area for archaeology.

We are ramping up our exciting programme of growth and improvements in the city centre and are soon to start the review of the Local Plan, so this is an excellent time to join the team and make a difference!

Alongside the professional opportunities, we can also offer a comprehensive range of benefits:
· Flexible and agile working to promote a healthy work/life balance.
· Leave entitlement starting at 26 days plus bank holidays, rising to 31 days (after 5 years) with the option to apply to purchase more.
· Flexi-time scheme which means you can accrue up to an extra day off each month.
· Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.
· Opt-in benefits, such as salary sacrifice bikes and local and national discounts on shopping, leisure, holidays and much more.
