Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Work-stream Lead to lead the AISI Chem-Bio team - a friendly team of around 20 people with backgrounds ranging from ML engineering, biologists and chemists at the intersection of ML, and government experts. This team is responsible for understanding the capabilities presented by frontier LLMs, open-source tools and narrow AI biological tools.
Our role is to advance the security science of advanced AI models including LLMs and more specialised AI models within biology and chemistry and to inform the wider policy environment.
You will lead a team researching specialised models within Biology and Chemistry with a goal to evaluate the capabilities of frontier biological models, and develop evaluations, benchmarks and technical safeguards for these tools. This is a technical role ideally suited for a candidate with a strong strategic perspective on AI safety and biological and chemical security, experience in team leadership, and a strong technical understanding of AI systems and capabilities for the chemical and biological sciences. The work-stream is situated within the AISI Research Unit and will report to the Research Unit Deputy Director. This post requires Security Clearance (SC) and any continued employment will be conditional on earning and maintaining this level of clearance.
Role summary
As work-stream lead of a cutting-edge research team, you will provide the strategic and managerial leadership to ensure the team continues to stay at the bleeding edge of AI evaluations and safety science, providing scientific direction, leading on hiring, and on working with critical stakeholders. You will need to:
+ Build and lead a talent-dense, multidisciplinary, and mission-driven team;
+ Develop and deliver a strategy for leveraging the technical team to identify and mitigate risks at the convergence of AI and the biological/chemical sciences;
+ Ensure the team's research portfolio answers critical policy questions and is informed by the input of relevant xWH experts and policy makers.
+ Develop cutting edge evaluations for understanding risks at the intersection of AI and biological/chemical security;
+ Where appropriate, develop and lead a portfolio of externally delivered research;
+ Ensure that research outcomes are disseminated to relevant stakeholders within government and the wider community;
+ Forge relationships with key partners in industry, academia, and across Government, including the national security community;
+ Act as part of AISI's overall leadership team, setting the culture and supporting staff;
+ The position offers a unique opportunity to push forward an emerging field, whilst part of an organisation that is a unique and fast-growing presence in AI research and governance.
This role sits outside of the DDaT pay framework given the scope of this role requires in depth technical expertise in frontier AI safety, robustness and advanced AI architectures., As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete a CV outlining relevant experience required for the job .
