Full Job Description
- Get specialist training in tank warfare and armoured combat
- Focus on combat
- Be part of a four-person crew who live, work and fight from the British Army's most impressive armoured vehicle
- Take on the only role in the British Army that allows you to become a tank driver
- Enjoy a varied role and opportunities to travel Step1 Your initial military training teaches you how to be a soldier, covering everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle.
- If you join as a Junior Soldier (under 17 years and 6 months), you'll do the basic military training (long) course at Harrogate.
- If you join as a Regular Soldier (over 17 years and 6 months), you'll do the regular adult basic training. Step 2 You head to Bovington, Dorset, for 20 weeks of specialist training to develop your technical skills. You will complete your driving licence (if you don't already have it) and then move on to your tracked vehicle licence (the H licence) before getting to grips with driving the 62-tonne Challenger 2. You will also learn how to maintain and fix the Challenger 2 as well as use the radios., Get honest answers from real soldiers in the roles you're interested in. Ask a question As a Tank Crewman you'll drive and operate this amazing vehicle as part of a four-man team… and deploy on training exercises across the UK and overseas. Eventually you can even qualify to command your own tank. Tank Crew work closely together to operate one of the Army's most powerful vehicles, progressing through different roles within the crew and building technical and leadership skills over time. David Royal Armoured Corps As an RAC soldier your days in barracks will be spent maintaining your vehicle platform, staying fit with your colleagues and preparing for training exercises or overseas deployments. When not in camp you could find yourself on live fire ranges or on exercise in the UK or abroad. Life in the Royal Armoured Corps combines technical skill with soldiering, where your role centres on mastering armoured vehicles, working as a crew and preparing for operations through constant training, physical fitness and exercises.

- Age range 16 - 36, Anybody who has a good general level of fitness will be absolutely fine. Basic training is about taking you from being fit to being Army fit. You don't need to arrive as a finished athlete. If you're reasonably active and willing to put the effort in, you'll improve quickly with training and support. Greg H Royal Military Police Most days you finish work and can spend your evenings however you like, and you're usually free to go away at weekends. When you're not on duty, your time is your own. Many people use evenings and weekends to relax, keep active, or spend time with friends on camp. James M Infantry There are varied periods where you'll be extremely busy and also periods where you could be having downtime at home with family and friends. Not at all. Some parts are intense, especially during training or when learning something new, but it's not like that all the time. You'll have structured periods where you're focused and pushed to do your best, but there's also downtime to reset, socialise and look after yourself. That balance helps you grow without feeling overwhelmed.
No formal qualifications needed, A powerful engine, heavy armour and massive firepower: that's the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. As a member of a Tank Crew you'll drive and operate this amazing vehicle as part of a four-strong team. You'll get to work in different roles including driver, gunner and loader. Eventually you can even qualify to command your own tank. But first, you'll get first-class training that will teach you how to look after your tank.
