Full Job Description

Biomedical Scientists (Specialist) are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques. As a Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a clinical technical service that will achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care. They will be expected to work as part of a team on a rotational basis in all of the diagnostic sections of the laboratory performing the work to the required standards. The department is divided into Automation and Special Assay, Reception and Separation sections with each section being organised and managed by a Section leader. The post holder will rotate through the various sections whilst maintaining an up to date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory. Following a satisfactory competency assessment, the post holder will be contactable on an emergency telephone line and work autonomously to provide an out of hours analytical Clinical Chemistry service for the Trust.Main duties of the job 1. Technical, Scientific and Diagnostic a. To undertake manual & automated laboratory investigations. b. To undertake routine maintenance on laboratory instruments. c. To undertake technical validation of the complex results from laboratory investigations ensuring accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols. d. To communicate patient results by telephone. e. To undertake method and laboratory instrument evaluation as required. f. To interpret diagnostic laboratory patient / Quality Control results and take appropriate actions 2. Line Management a) In the absence of senior management to manage and deploy Biomedical Scientists, MLA and other staff Additional responsibilities carried out by post holder To decide from the responsibilities outlined below 1) Departmental Training Officer

  • Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practioneers in accordance with Institute of Biomedical Sciences portfolio and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) guidelines.
  • 2) Departmental Safety Officer To support the departmental safety officer lead to ensure audits and risk and COSHH assessment are carried out according Update/maintain Departmental safety documentation as required 3) Stock control
  • To support Senior staff in all aspects of stock control
  • 4) Quality Assurance
  • To support Senior staff in aspects of Quality Assurance
