Join us in a role where your expertise directly shapes safer workplaces and stronger communities. As a Safety Adviser, you will play a vital part in delivering proactive, competent and comprehensive safety services across Birmingham City Council and its partner organisations. Your work will help protect employees, residents and stakeholders, while supporting a positive, pragmatic safety culture throughout the organisation. You will collaborate with managers, directors, safety committees and external bodies to identify risks, influence decision-making and drive continuous improvement. From shaping policy and delivering training to leading audits, investigations and major-incident support, this is a role with real variety, visibility and impact. What you will do

  • Provide expert advice on legislation, safe working practices and compliance
  • Support leaders in identifying risks, prioritising actions and developing safety plans
  • Shape policy and guidance through toolkits, procedures and best-practice frameworks
  • Lead audits, inspections and investigations to identify trends and root causes
  • Deliver engaging training to staff at all levels
  • Work collaboratively with trade unions, emergency services, HSE and legal teams
  • Respond to major incidents and support organisational resilience
  • Champion sensible, proportionate and cost-effective risk management

    Strong technical knowledge of H&S legislation, ACOPs and best-practice management
  • Practical advisory experience in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment
  • Training design and delivery skills that engage and motivate staff
  • Confidence to challenge while offering pragmatic, solution-focused advice
  • Excellent communication and the ability to build trust at all levels
  • Flexible, proportionate approach to safety management
  • Political awareness and the ability to operate effectively in a local-authority setting
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills with a proactive mindset
  • Teamwork and independence - able to collaborate widely while working autonomously
  • IT competence including Microsoft Office, SAP and other relevant systems
  • Trained to at least NEBOSH Certificate standard or equivalent
