Locum Consultant Cellular Pathologist interest in GI Pathology

This is a locum post (10 PAs) to cover maternity leave. The Department of Pathology is seeking a locum consultant to join a dynamic and supportive team of colleagues. The post holder is expected to have demonstrable major interest and current experience in gynaecological histopathology. However, other specialist interests would be considered as a minor component of a post, depending on the requirements of the department at the time.

The department is involved in many exciting initiatives and we are looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement the team and keep the service at the forefront of clinical and academic excellence. The laboratory has full UKAS/ISO accreditation status.

The post will include working at both hospital sites as well as the new Synnovis Blackfriars Hub Laboratory (near Southwark tube station).

Main duties of the job

Gastro-intestinal pathology:

Responsibilities include the reporting GI specimens (biopsies and resections from upper and lower GI tract, 'surgical' liver biopsies and a few biliary tract biopsies).

GSTT is the Upper gastrointestinal cancer centre for South-east London, Medway and East Kent and regional network referral centre for anal tumours. It is also a tertiary referral centre for coeliac disease, complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease cases, the management of early neoplasia in Barrett's oesophagus and EUS Fine Needle Biopsies (the latter reported by the cytopathologists).

The surgical specimens encompass the standard neoplastic and non-neoplastic resections for upper and lower GI, including oesophago-gastrectomies, but we also specialise in radical and salvage pelvic exenterations for complex/ recurrent colorectal and anal tumours.

We routinely perform cancer predictive marker testing for the GI cancers, in accordance with national guidelines.

There are five MDM's, four weekly and one monthly. These are Upper GI, Local Hepato-pancreaticobiliary, Lower GI and Inflammatory Bowel Disease MDMs weekly.

We are involved in multiple research studies and tissue banking.

We are committed to teaching postgraduate students as well as being involved in the university teaching of undergraduate students.

The team is actively involved in the teaching and training of resident doctors including all aspects of specimen dissection, histological interpretation and report writing.

Cellular Pathology Department

The Department of Cellular Pathology provides services to Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals, local general practitioners in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Strategic Health Authority and local Coroners. It is a major cancer and infection referral centre. The main Cellular Pathology Department is located at St Thomas' Hospital, 2nd Floor North Wing, with cut-up located at the Hub laboratory.
