Junior Research Fellow in Advanced Head and Neck Surgery

This 12-month Junior Research Fellowship provides a combined clinical and academic opportunity within the Guy's and St Thomas' Thyroid & Head and Neck Cancer Unit. It would suit an early-career doctor with an interest in Otorhinolaryngology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Head & Neck Surgery and/or surgical oncology who wishes to develop experience in head and neck cancer alongside a structured programme of clinical research.

The Fellow will gain supervised clinical experience through specialist Head & Neck clinics, operating theatres, multidisciplinary team meetings and ward-based care, while undertaking protected research activity within the Unit.

A major component of the post will be participation in the Unit's active clinical research, audit and innovation programmes. Opportunities will include contributing to and, where appropriate, leading prospective and retrospective clinical studies, clinical data collection and database development, audit and quality improvement, study delivery, data analysis, preparation of abstracts and manuscripts and presentation of work at national and international meetings. The Fellow will be encouraged to become involved with existing projects leading towards peer-reviewed publication., The Fellowship is under the supervision of Mr Asit Arora and Mr Ricard Simo who are the Lead Educational Supervisors for the post. The Fellowship includes all aspects of Advanced Head and Neck Surgery with emphasis on Head and Neck Oncological Surgery. The Unit has a large tertiary referral base for Complex Head and Neck Oncological Surgery including Salvage Surgery, Robotic Surgery, Thyroid and Salivary Gland Cancer. The Unit also provides a tertiary referral base for complex Thyroid Surgery including revision and mediastinal surgery, malignant skull base surgery, complex head and neck skin cancers and surgery for TMJ disorders and osteoradionecrosis. Core components of the Fellowship include: Full weekly Head and Neck Oncology and Thyroid MDT meetings, ablative and reconstructive surgery, complex thyroid and salivary gland surgery, airway surgery, revision and salvage surgery, regular audit and clinical research

The posts are fixed term for 12 months and is based at Guy's Hospital where the Head and Neck Surgery Cancer Unit is established.

When On-call, the post-holders will be covering general Otorhinolaryngology at Guy's and St Thomas on a one in ten basis with internal cover. This will be from home but on-call accommodation will be provided if preferred.
