Full Job Description
The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Assistant (Early Career Researcher, ECR) to work on on the development and functional characterisation of nano/micropatterned antimicrobial coatings onto planar and curved surfaces, towards their application to catheters and cardiovascular devices. The post is integrated within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN) iSTRIDE (inter-Sectoral Training for Research on the Pathology and Prevention of Indwelling Device Associated infEctions). iSTRIDE brings together a consortium of leading academic and industrial partners to tackle pressing issues related to Indwelling Device Associated Infections (IDAIs). iSTRIDE integrates six hospitals, one research institute, seven academic universities, and two industrial partners, with profound expertise in microbiology, materials science, and diagnostic technology. The overall objective of the project is to deeper the understanding of different types of IDAIs and develop smart diagnostic tools and effective antimicrobial coatings. Within the iSTRIDE Doctoral Network, 10 doctoral candidates (DCs) will receive advanced training. The programme emphasizes the development of strong translational skills for careers in biomedical research and medical technology innovation. Training is delivered through cross institutional collaboration, active engagement with industry partners, structured workshops, and research secondments. A distinctive feature of iSTRIDE is that all DCs will complete a hospital internship during their first year, providing early exposure to clinical environments and real world healthcare challenges.
This is an excellent opportunity to work on a challenging research project at a leading academic institution, within an EU network, and develop multidisciplinary research and leadership skills. To comply with funding conditions, applicants must not have a PhD and must have fewer than 4 years research experience. At the time of selection, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work or studies) in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years. The successful candidate will be registered for a PhD at Imperial College London., · MRes, MSc, or equivalent degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Materials, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience · Experience in soft materials, patterning, and of a broad range of physical-chemistry techniques (including AFM, profilometry, lithography, etc). · Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals · Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team, Master Degree or equivalent Languages ENGLISH
The contract will run for 36 months in the first instance, with the possibility of an extension thereafter.
