Full Job Description

Services holds printed collections of approximately two million volumes covering a range of disciplines and housed at various sites. Approximately 25% is kept at UCL Library Services' Store in Wickford, Essex. This material includes important research materials and stock relegated from the sites plus UCL's paper records. The Store is a large warehouse (28,700 square feet) with modern office space. It is central to the management of important research collections and provides a daily delivery of requested items to all UCL site libraries. It is not open to users.The Wickford Store team is part of the Collection Strategy team and consists of 6.28 FTE staff. It is open Mon - Fri (daytime only). The post holder works closely with the Head of Retrospective Cataloguing who is also based at Wickford 4 days per week, and the Stores Service Manager based in the Science Library.The postholder supervises and manages a team of Store Assistants for the daily running of the stores delivery service to ensure that service delivery targets are met. The postholder deputises as required for the Wickford Site Manager in the overall running of the Wickford Store and assist with all aspects of daily site management including opening and closing, maintenance and Health & Safety.

  • This is an internal secondment role (Maternity Cover), available to current UCL staff only.
  • This is a fixed term cover role until 27th June 2026.
  • The post involves operating machinery and some moving and lifting of heavy books. Full training will be provided.
  • This is an on-campus role. It is not suitable for regular remote working.

The salary for this role is £17,349 per annum including London Allowance.Energetic and enthusiastic person with experience of working in a library setting, preferably with some element of service provision. Self-motivated, hardworking and a problem solver, you will thrive in a team-oriented environment and play a key role in leading the small team
  • located at our off-site store in Wickford.We are looking for candidates who in particular have the following skills and experience:
  • Excellent communication skills are required as you will be working with a wide range of internal customers including Library staff across the service, other UCL staff (especially Estates & Facilities) and external organisations e.g., recruitment agencies, local businesses, and contractors.
  • The line management or supervisory experience of some kind is essential. The role includes line management of and supervising Grade 5 Store Assistants.
  • Strong organisational skills including the ability to manage and prioritise your workload and meet deadlines
  • You will also be committed to your own and others' continuing professional development.
