Building Safety Officer

Birmingham City Council are looking for skilled and motivated individuals to join the Housing Service as Building Safety Officers. This is a key operational role where you will support the delivery of building safety compliance across the Temporary Accommodation (TA) portfolio and wider residential buildings. You will play an important role in a service operating at significant scale, with over 5,500 households currently in Temporary Accommodation. As the portfolio continues to expand, strengthening building safety compliance, oversight and assurance is a key priority to ensure the Council meets its legal obligations and provides safe, high-quality accommodation for residents. Working as part of a developing compliance function, you will support the Building Safety Manager to ensure that buildings are safe, well managed, and fully compliant with regulatory requirements. This includes working across a diverse range of property types, including multi-occupied residential and higher-risk buildings. This is a challenging but rewarding opportunity to contribute to a high-impact service, helping to manage risk, improve standards and ensure residents are safe in their homes. What you will be doing In this operational role, you will:

• Support the delivery of building safety compliance across Temporary Accommodation and other residential buildings
• Assist the Building Safety Manager in ensuring the Council meets its statutory duties as the accountable body for building safety
• Monitor and support building safety processes, including fire safety, health & safety and compliance programmes
• Carry out inspections, including fire risk assessments and health & safety checks, ensuring any risks are identified and addressed in a timely manner
• Support the management of building safety information, ensuring records are accurate and up to date
• Monitor contractor activity on site, ensuring all works are completed safely and in accordance with regulations and standards
• Challenge poor practice and escalate non-compliance where required
• Work with residents and occupiers to promote building safety, providing information and responding to concerns
• Support resident engagement, ensuring customers understand their role in maintaining safety within their homes
• Contribute to compliance monitoring, audits, and reporting processes
• Work collaboratively with internal teams, contractors and external partners to resolve issues and maintain standards
  
  We are looking for individuals who are confident, detail-focused and able to work effectively in a regulated and fast-paced environment.
You will bring:
• Experience working in building safety, property maintenance, compliance, or a related field
• A good understanding of building safety, fire safety, and health & safety requirements
• Experience of conducting inspections, risk assessments or working within compliance frameworks
• Knowledge of residential or multi-occupancy buildings and associated risks
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage with residents, colleagues and contractors
• The ability to identify risks, problem solve and take appropriate action
• Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
• Confidence using IT systems and maintaining accurate records
• The ability to work collaboratively within a team and across services
• A proactive and responsible approach to ensuring safety and compliance
These roles are hybrid, with working arrangements based on service needs and requiring attendance at face-to-face meetings.
