Full Job Description

You will undertake planned, reactive and emergency maintenance across a complex estate, ensuring electrical systems, plant and associated infrastructure are safe, compliant and fully operational.

You will carry out inspection, testing, fault diagnosis, repair and commissioning of electrical installations and equipment in line with statutory legislation and Trust policies. Acting as a Competent Person, you will use approved isolation, permit to work and safe systems of work to ensure tasks are completed to a high standard.

The role involves managing and prioritising workloads, responding to routine and urgent requests while minimising disruption to clinical services. You will provide day to day technical oversight and guidance to maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors, ensuring quality, safety and professionalism.

You will work both independently and as part of a wider multi trade team, contributing to service continuity through participation in the on call rota. Identifying risks, escalating defects and supporting continuous improvement are central to maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

At University Hospitals Birmingham, our Estates teams have always understood a simple truth: patient safety starts with safe, well maintained buildings and facilities. Following a period of review, this role has been formally re evaluated and uplifted to Band 5, recognising the level of skill, responsibility and judgement required.

This post is based at Solihull Hospital, a site with a genuine family feel, deeply connected to the community it serves. Here, the patients you support are often the people you know neighbours, friends, and family. Successful candidates will see first hand how their work directly impacts patient care, every single day.

As one of around 35 multi skilled trade professionals, you will join a collaborative Estates team delivering services across inpatient areas, outpatients and theatres. We are committed to developing, training and retaining skills within our own teams, reducing reliance on external contractors and ensuring quality, value for money and long term sustainability.

This role will appeal to experienced, qualified electricians who may not be driven purely by pay, but by purpose whether that is job security, trusted NHS benefits, a better work life balance, or the chance to give something back to the community they live in.

Solihull Hospital offers a supportive, close knit working environment with the backing and security of the NHS., University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust strives to have an inclusive culture where everyone feels like they belong, can thrive, knows that they add value and feels valued. We do this by developing compassionate and culturally competent leaders, being values driven in all that we do and by creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace that thrives on the diversity of our people. As such we want to attract and recruit talented individuals from all backgrounds, and for each of you to feel supported for the diversity you bring, to achieve your full potential. For those staff with a disability, including physical disability, long term health condition, mental health or neurodiverse condition, this also means being committed to making reasonable adjustments needed for you to carry out your role.
