Full Job Description

  • Working towards independently dissecting complex oncological resection specimens.
  • Drafting histopathology reports of the cases and working towards independently reporting of soft tissue and bone biopsy and resection specimens.
  • Engaging with molecular pathology to have comprehensive understating of interpretation of molecular findings in this diagnostic field.
  • Participating in biobanking material from both extremity and retroperitoneal samples
  • To participate in CPD activities
  • Actively participate in sectional and departmental reviews and meetings.
  • Work with colleagues to provide a comprehensive service to the Trust and ensure that the highest standards of care are achieved.
  • Support the development of a culture of continuous improvement, developing and contributing to service developments and the formulation of business cases to support these.
  • To manage compliance with good laboratory practice in accordance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards e.g., ISO 5189, Blood Safety Quality Regulations (BSQR) and Human Tissue Authority (HTA).
  • Communicate patient information that is of a sensitive, highly complex and technical nature with clinical and non-clinical colleagues both internally and externally.
  • Partake in MDTs.
  • Good organisation, problem solving and time management skills with overall responsibility for delivering your agreed job plan.

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Cellular Pathology Department as a fellow with a primary focus on the Bone and Soft Tissue unit (BASTU) allowing them to develop high level diagnostic skills in this specialist sector.
  • University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The Trust is a major Trauma Centre and has the largest Critical Care unit in Europe, also undertaking the largest number of solid organ transplants in Europe and undertakes cutting edge surgeries placing a demand on the service. The Cellular Pathology diagnostic laboratory houses a wide variety of sub-specialities including histopathology, cytopathology, electron microscopy, a muscle biopsy service, molecular pathology services, a specialist bone and soft tissue unit, MOHS service, andrology service as well as a postmortem suite, mortuary and body repository.
