Full Job Description
Bruker has an opening for Electron Microscope Staff Scientist, based in Cambridge, UK. The successful candidate will be embedded in the Materials Science Department of Cambridge University and will conduct research on structure determination methods for beam-sensitive organic and biological materials, by electron diffraction and 4D STEM. He or she will also be responsible for day-to-day operation of a Nion UltraSTEM microscope, based in the department. The role will involve working with Prof. Paul Midgely and his colleagues, and with Bruker's EM teams in the USA and the UK. The successful candidate will have outstanding practical skills, strong drive to improve electron microscopy techniques and methods, and infectious enthusiasm for producing ground-breaking experimental results.
- Act as the primary expert user for a new Nion UltraSTEM microscope, installed in the Wolfson Electron Microscopy Suite in the Materials Science and Metallurgy Department of Cambridge University.
- Provide practical guidance and training for users wishing to use the microscope.
- Work with Bruker electron microscopy R&D teams on the development of new structure-determination methods such as Micro Electron Diffraction (microED) and 4D STEM, and demonstrate their power by applying them to practical problems.
- Collaborate with and support Prof. Paul Midgley and other University of Cambridge researchers on diffraction-based experiments.
- Work with University of Cambridge support staff to ensure smooth running of the microscope.
- Keep abreast of the latest scientific developments in electron diffraction and crystallography.
- Become an expert user of the Nion Swift microscope control and analysis software, and provide input into the development of new user interface enhancements.
- Provide "voice of the customer" input to Bruker R&D teams to guide the usability of product workflows as they are developed.
- Proactively suggest new approaches and methodologies in the electron diffraction field.
PhD in physics or materials science, with practical experience of electron diffraction and crystallography, and a strong element of STEM usage. - Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Deep understanding of electron microscopy and its instrumentation.
- Demonstrable skill in obtaining high-quality results from complex instruments.
- Drive to bring projects to a successful finish and eagerness to move onto subsequent challenges. Desirable Qualifications
- Extensive experience using Nion microscopes.
- Sound understanding of 4D-STEM and related methods, including ptychography.
- Familiarity with the latest approaches in microED and 4D STEM.
- Demonstrable experience in working independently and managing multiple simultaneous priorities to meet strict deadlines.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly with colleagues in different departments, with a wide range of background experiences.
- Practical skills in sample preparation for electron microscopy and crystallography.
- Availability to travel internationally for training and information exchange.
Cambridge University has been driving innovation in Physical Sciences for centuries, starting with Isaac Newton, and continuing with 125 Nobel prizes awarded to its researchers and affiliates so far. The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and its researchers have a great track record in developing new methods of Electron Microscopy, such as precession electron diffraction. The department operates a large, state-of-the-art electron microscope facility, and it collaborates with other Cambridge departments including the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (https://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk) and the Department of Physics (https://www.phy.cam.ac.uk ).
