We are recruiting for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Geography and Environmental Science (which is within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences). This role will be working across two projects which have a focus on the climate and carbon. Working within the Convex Seascape Survey project, the Research Fellow will be studying, quantifying and evaluating the environmental impacts of marine scientific research from ship, lab and desk activities. This will involve analysing categorical and numerical data to identify recommendations on how to reduce these impacts, with a particular focus on carbon emissions, and we have a large dataset ready for this analysis. Working within the European Space Agency (ESA) project 'Marine-Atmosphere eXtreme Satellite Synergy (MAXSS)' the Research Fellow will be quantifying how hurricanes, tropical cyclones and polar lows influence and change the global ocean carbon sink. Again, here we have a large dataset that is ready to be exploited by the successful candidate. The research will involve the design of experiments, the exploitation of some existing dataset along with the generation of new data, and the development and use of scientific Python programming. About you The successful applicant will be responsible for undertaking research and analysing results. You will able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals and make presentations at conferences and other events. Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in their field and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
