Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity in the School of English for someone with a passion for Romantic period literature looking to use their skills in editing and commentary to make an impact on a new edition of Shelley's work for Oxford University Press. The Research Associate will assist the editor (Dr Madeleine Callaghan) of a new edition of the selected works of the Percy Bysshe Shelley to be published by Oxford University Press as part of the 21st Century Oxford Authors series. This edition aims to present Shelley's work as fully as possible by offering an edition that spans his poetry, prose, and letters. We are seeking candidates with a PhD (or equivalent experience) or or be on track to achieving a PhD in Romanticism, ideally focusing upon the work of Percy Bysshe Shelley, as well as expertise in or an appetite to become expert in editorial practice. As this role involves meticulous work in terms of editing and establishing texts, you will also need experience or knowledge of
editorial work, ideally of the work of Percy Bysshe Shelley. As you will be responsible for checking texts and establishing copy texts, editorial experience would be an advantage. If you are passionate about editorial work and the works of Romantic poets (particularly Shelley), then we would love to hear from you. The University of Sheffield is a remarkable place to work. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Their diverse backgrounds, abilities and beliefs make Sheffield a world-class university. We offer a fantastic range of benefits including a highly competitive annual leave entitlement (with the ability to purchase more), a generous pensions scheme, flexible working opportunities,a commitment to your development and wellbeing, a wide range of retail discounts, and much more. Find out more at www.sheffield.ac.uk/benefits and join us to become part of something special. 4 A Remarkable Place To Work The School of English is known for its
international-quality research in English Literature, Theatre and Performance, Creative Writing, Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Literary Linguistics, and English Language. Much of this activity is passed onto students through our research-led approach to learning and teaching. With over 50 members of academic staff, the School of English is able to offer outstanding teaching across a wide range of subject areas. We have an international reputation for high quality and innovative learning and teaching, delivered by staff who are both committed to providing an outstanding student experience and who are at the cutting edge of research in their own disciplines. Your standing and approaches will further strengthen our strong international research profile and our reputation for novel, research-led teaching. You will use your editing skills to provide essential support to the editor, Madeleine Callaghan, helping to ensure the reputation of the
University by establishing Percy Bysshe Shelley's texts by meticulous editing. You will play a key role in maintaining our reputation for Romantic period literature by establishing the texts in collaboration with Dr Madeleine Callaghan. As this role requires a meticulous eye for details, it provides an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in editorial work and writing up commentaries/notes upon texts. This role offers you the opportunity to gain intense familiarity with Shelley's works by becoming a key part of the team aiming to present a new view of Shelley's achievement. In this varied and dynamic role, you will be responsible for working on the central principles of scholarly editing: namely, the need to follow copy-text; to indicate divergence from it clearly; to be able to prepare collations. Working alongside Callaghan, the role will offer you an opportunity to grow and develop your editorial skills. We are committed to exploring
flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and the University: remote working is fine if the candidate can commit to regular editorial meetings (at least once a week in Sheffield). We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
