Full Job Description
Bristol University Press (BUP) and its imprint Policy Press (PP) are looking to appoint a Journals Assistant Production Editor to join our small, committed and friendly journals production team. BUP is an academic publisher committed to publishing the highest-quality international scholarship in the social sciences and aligned disciplines, with a focus on global social challenges. As a not-for-profit university press, we put integrity before profit to provide an internationally respected platform for the global scholarly community to disseminate work that matters. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that allocated journal titles are produced to Bristol University Press quality standards, and to time and budget. The role requires a thorough understanding of production processes, the ability to prioritise and the ability to react swiftly to changing circumstancesWhat will you be doing?
- Maintain and update production schedules and report any changes to colleagues and authors.
- Ensure work on allocated titles is completed by the deadline, adheres to quality standards and to budget.
- Respond to external enquiries from journal editors, authors, freelancers and suppliers and use judgement when to involve other colleagues.
- Prioritise tasks and respond to internal queries from colleagues and line manager to ensure titles are produced on time and to budget.
- Prepare back cover copy and send titles to print.
- Liaise with colleagues in journals, commissioning and marketing to ensure they are informed of processes and updates where necessary.
- Use initiative to solve problems (for example, using diplomacy and negotiation skills to manage/resolve disputes between between journal editors, authors and suppliers during production process) and then to involve senior colleagues if unable to find a solution.
You should apply if you have an excellent command of written English, a proven ability to proofread text, effective organisational skills, meticulous attention to detail, knowledge of digital publishing, experience of preparing text and cover files for print, experience in a relevant production assistant or production editor role and experience interacting with authors.
