Full Job Description

Turpin Miller are seeking a solicitor/caseworker to join our deportation team working within our prison projects in challenging Home Office deportation decisions and applications for judicial review., We run three dedicated prison projects assisting clients in the women's prison estate (any prison), young offenders (any prison) and men in HMP Huntercombe (a foreign national offender only prison outside Oxford). The women's prison project and HMP Huntercombe project is run in conjunction with the Bonavero Institute for Human Rights at Oxford University. We represent clients at the initial stage of the process, in their appeals, detention/accommodation cases and associated public law challenges, including refusal of Home Detention Curfew ('HDC'), negative trafficking decisions, public order disqualifications and certified decisions. The gaps in Legal Aid provision dramatically impact Foreign National Offenders in prisons and these projects are unique in focusing on this vulnerable client group. The work is challenging but rewarding and we are committed to maintaining it. You will be required to have conduct of your own caseload from day one. Our caseloads are almost entirely covered by Legal Aid so are busy, varied and involve a significant amount of client contact. Primarily, you will be preparing appeals but you will also have the opportunity to develop judicial review challenges from your existing caseload. Our deportation team is small - 6 people - and you will therefore be required to assist the wider team as required. Salary is dependent on experience with a range of £32k - £40k. Our office is based in Oxford but flexible working arrangements are possible and can be discussed on application.

We are looking for a person who is accredited as a Senior Immigration Caseworker/Solicitor/Adviser and has 2+ years of experience working in immigration law/casework/relevant advice (required). However, if you have other relevant experience and are committed to working with us, we would also be interested in meeting with you., a. Qualified solicitor or a senior caseworker under the Law Society Accreditation Scheme b. 2 years+ experience of conduct of immigration casework under a legal aid contract, or in advisory/advocacy positions representing migrants outside of law firms c. A strong interest in immigration law and commitment to working in a legal aid practice such as Turpin Miller. d. A commitment to a long-term career in legal practice. 2) Skills a. Taking instructions, interviewing clients and advising them. b. Ability to communicate clearly & effectively in written English c. Prioritisation own workload to deadlines d. Manage time effectively and record time spent so as to meet an annual time recording target. To be able to meet a chargeable hours target of 6 chargeable hours e. Ability to understand and apply the Legal Aid Agency rules and practice pertaining to funding,

  • 2 years+ casework experience in immigration law and/or equivalent advocacy/adviser roles
  • Qualified solicitor (NQ onwards) or senior caseworker

    Additional leave
  • Company pension
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee discount
