Full Job Description

As Interpretation & Content Developer, you will support the content and interactive development of the major new galleries and play a key role within the SIM Public Programme team, working in a visitor focused way and building science capital amongst audiences. Working closely with industry partners and specialists, you will focus on developing and delivering compelling narratives, interpretation, text and interactives for the gallery.

Can you effectively communicate big ideas in a creative and engaging way? Can you use your research skills to understand more about our audiences so we can tailor content for them?, Joining us, you will be able to research and communicate complex and big ideas in a creative and engaging way, with experience of developing, tailoring and delivering narratives. You will be interested in STEM and will be keen to learn how to create audience-focused interactive galleries. You will be able to work to deadlines and project programmes in an organised and efficient way.

At Science Museum Group (SMG) we are here to inspire futures. Our vision is to 'think big' in the delivery of bold creative galleries and programmes, sharing authentic stories in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The Science and Industry Museum (SIM), part of SMG, explores how ideas can change the world, from the Industrial Revolution to today. At SIM, we are part way through the transformation of our historic museum site and collection displays, ensuring our galleries and spaces meet visitor needs in relevant and dynamic ways. As part of this ambitious programme of capital projects we are now developing two fantastic new galleries - Wonderlab and Technicians Gallery. To support the work on these galleries, we are now seeking two Interpretation & Content Developers - one working on each gallery, on a fixed term contract (until 2027 - Wonderlab, and 2030 - Technicians), on a full-time basis., Working with a world-leading museum group that offers access to truly unique environments and collections, you'll benefit from the perks listed below, as well as full support for life events such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.

  • Meaningful work. We're a mission-led organisation where the work you do supports us in Inspiring Futures.
  • Career growth. We offer enhanced support with personal and professional development.
  • Work/life balance. We offer 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays, along with flexible policies which support you and your home life.
  • Health & Dental Insurance. Extra peace of mind, from day one.
  • All our colleagues can access an employee assistance programme, access to the Unmind app, and other wellbeing support.
  • Colleague networks. Our colleague-led networks are an informal forum for colleagues to come together to discuss topics of shared interest and lived experience. They create a space for people to exchange ideas, discuss best practice, socialise and build a sense of community.
  • Enhanced contributory pension. To support you in saving for the future.
  • Interest-free loans. When you need a little extra cash for life events or home improvements.
  • Great discounts. Free entry to exhibitions, discounts in our shops, cafes, and access to other museums in the NMDC network.
  • Open for All is one of the Science Museum Group's five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to develop a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge, and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation, capable to continue to Inspire Futures.
