Full Job Description

The Board is the decision-making body and is accountable for all its academies equally. In accordance with the Trust's Scheme of Delegation, some responsibilities are delegated to committees, local governing boards or individuals, but the Board of Trustees remains accountable for all decisions made. The Board sets out and champions a clear strategy and has four key functions:

  • Ensure there is clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • Hold executive leaders to account for educational performance, pupil outcomes and staff performance management.
  • Oversee the financial performance of the Trust and make sure its money is well spent.
  • Ensure the voices of stakeholders are heard.
  • You must be 18 or over to be a trustee and you do not need to be a parent. No specific experience in the education sector is required. We welcome trustees from diverse backgrounds with skills and professional knowledge in a variety of areas such as finance, HR, audit and risk, IT and estates management. Most importantly though, we want people with enthusiasm, commitment and to share our ambition to go from 'Good to Great'. The expected time commitment is approximately five to eight hours per month, although this will vary depending on the needs of the Trust and the specific trustee role. Trustees will be expected to attend meetings (both during the working day and in the evening) having read the associated paperwork and be prepared to participate. There are six Board meetings each year plus committee meetings and ad hoc panels. Trustees are expected sit on two committees. Trustees are encouraged to visit academies to gain a greater insight into the day-to-day life, achievements and challenges faced. Trustees must undertake statutory training as well as access additional development opportunities to support specific roles. Like magistrates or members of a jury, trustees have a right to reasonable time off work for their public duties, although may be unpaid. The term of office for trustees is four years. However, as a volunteer you can resign before your term is finished if your circumstances change.

Abbey Multi Academy Trust (MAT) is a trust of eight academies located across the Leeds and Calderdale area. With five primaries and three secondaries, the Trust covers an age range of 3 - 19 years. We work in partnership to improve quality, share best practice and operate effectively, whilst always valuing the different contexts of our academies. Our academies, supported by a wider network of Local Governing Boards across our Trust, question, change and innovate to help pupils become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. Each of our academies is rated Good in all areas by Ofsted.
