Full Job Description

The Head of Track is responsible for the overall management, maintenance, and development of the railway's permanent way infrastructure, including track, ballast, points, and drainage systems. The role ensures that all track work is performed to heritage, regulatory, and operational standards, supporting both the safety and authenticity of railway operations.,

  • Oversee the inspection, maintenance, repair, and renewal of all permanent way infrastructure.
  • Lead and manage the permanent way team and Signalling and Communications (S&T) including staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and maintain asset management systems, maintenance schedules, and safety documentation in accordance with industry standards and the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) guidelines.
  • Accountable for the on-track plant fleet and engineering wagon fleet.

  • Prepare and manage budgets for track work, including long-term planning for renewals and capital projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, internal policies, and heritage conservation requirements.
  • Coordinate with other departments (e.g., operations, signalling, rolling stock) to plan works with minimal disruption to services.
  • Provide technical guidance and training for staff and volunteers.
  • Lead response to any track-related incidents or emergencies.
  • Liaise with external contractors and consultants when necessary.
  • Participate in strategic infrastructure planning with the senior management team., Infrastructure and Engineering teams.
  • Operations and Signalling departments.
  • Safety and Compliance Officer.
  • Volunteers and external contractors.
  • Regulators (e.g., ORR, RAIB if applicable).
  • Performance Indicators:
  • Track availability and reliability.
  • Compliance with inspection and maintenance schedules.
  • Incident and safety audit outcomes.
  • Budget adherence and project delivery.
  • Staff and volunteer engagement and training levels.
  • Managing general administration tasks within the Infrastructure Department.
  • Taking and making phone calls and written communications along with making diary entries for the Infrastructure Manager and discipline leads.
  • Assisting in the preparation of regularly scheduled reports and departmental budgets.
  • Updating and maintaining office policies and procedures.
  • Ordering materials and researching new deals and suppliers.
  • Maintaining, developing and updating online databases and systems used in the Infrastructure Department (full training will be given).
  • Assisting with general administration in other departments when necessary.
  • Working as part of a small team as well as using your own initiative, you will need to be able to work to timescales given with attention to detail. You must also be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications.

    Essential:
  • Proven experience in permanent way maintenance or engineering, preferably in a heritage or light railway setting.
  • Strong understanding of track construction, alignment, inspection, and maintenance practices.
  • Leadership and team management experience, including working with volunteers.
  • Familiarity with safety and regulatory requirements, including ROGS and ORR standards.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Desirable:
  • Relevant engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ, HNC, or degree in Civil Engineering or Track Engineering).
  • Experience working on heritage railway infrastructure.
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification.
  • Understanding of historical trackwork practices and conservation principles.

    Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience.

It is a charity, and its purpose is to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic assets (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, structures, buildings and archives). Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Trust working with an establishment of over 100 paid employees.,
