Full Job Description

We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our team working from either of our Birmingham or Nottingham city centre offices. You will have the opportunity to push boundaries, develop new skills, and work on some of the current high-profile projects, from major urban developments and infrastructure improvements to projects that deliver our energy transition, enhance the natural environment, or provide resilience to the effects of climate change.
As a Geotechnical Engineer at Arup, you will:
- Interpret and characterise the ground and develop and supervise ground investigations.
- Undertake geotechnical analysis to develop solutions to complex geotechnical challenges.
- Design geotechnical works and provide construction support for both building and infrastructure projects, including shallow and deep foundations, gravity/embedded retaining walls, ground improvement, underground structures, and earthworks, and prepare geotechnical design reports and specifications.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and project managers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Write reports for internal and external recipients. Present technical material (traditional and innovative methods) to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Understand trends and best practices in the geotechnical industry. Develop new or existing tools to support analyses and design.
Is this role right for you?
We are looking for someone who is passionate about geotechnical engineering and wants to contribute to shaping a more sustainable and resilient built environment. We are looking for individuals with:
- A degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering. A post-graduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, or equivalent is an advantage.
- Are working towards Chartered status of a professional engineering organisation.

A background working as a geotechnical engineer, with an understanding and experience of geotechnical analysis and design of foundations, retaining structures, slope stability measures, and earthworks. An interest in geo-seismic design is desirable.
- Good planning, organisational, and time management skills.
- Experience in and enthusiasm for digital technologies applicable to geotechnical engineering is desirable, for example, the use of finite element software, GIS, programming (especially in python), and data (management, processing, and visualisation).
- Strong communication skills, including report writing and presentations. Enquiring minds and a desire to learn and progress their career.
