About us
Are you an experienced Electrical Engineer with expertise in lifts, looking for your next big challenge? At UCL, one of the world's leading universities, we're investing in the future of our estate - over 270 buildings worth more than £3 billion - and we need exceptional talent to help us deliver. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping a safe, sustainable, and world-class campus experience for our staff, students, and visitors.
About the role
As a Building Services Engineer (Electrical - Lifts Specialism), you will lead the delivery of UCL's ambitious 20-year Lift Modernisation Programme, ensuring accessibility, safety, and innovation are at the heart of our estate. Working closely with our Inclusivity and Fire Safety teams, you'll develop and deliver strategies that meet compliance requirements while driving forward sustainability and carbon reduction targets.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading lift modernisation projects from design through to completion.
- Providing expert electrical building services advice on maintenance, refurbishment, and new build works.
- Managing contracts, suppliers, budgets, and ensuring compliance with statutory regulations.
- Reporting on project progress and risks, supporting strategic planning, and enhancing user experience across UCL's estate.
About you
We're looking for someone who is highly motivated, technically skilled, and passionate about delivering impactful engineering solutions. You'll bring:
- Strong experience in designing and managing electrical engineering projects (£5k-£1m).
- Specialist expertise in lift installation/modernisation.
- Excellent knowledge of statutory regulations (IET Wiring, Equality Act, CDM Regulations, etc.).
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise effectively, and deliver results under pressure.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, customer-focused approach.
- A relevant degree or professional qualification is desirable, but equivalent experience will also be considered.
Why Join UCL?
- Be part of a world-class university with a truly global reputation.
- Shape the future of one of the UK's largest and most complex estates.
- Work in a hybrid role with flexibility and excellent benefits.
- Contribute to projects that make a real difference - improving accessibility, sustainability, and the student experience.
At UCL, we value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
What we offer
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
- 41 Days holiday (27 days annual leave, 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
- Additional 5 days' annual leave purchase scheme
- Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
- Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
- Immigration loan
- Relocation scheme for certain posts
- On-Site nursery
- On-site gym
- Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
- Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
- Discounted medical insurance
Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
As London's Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world's talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL's workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women.
