Full Job Description
Do you want to help build, scale and operate a platform to support a product that you (and everyone you know) will use? Do you have a passion to learn about new technologies? If so, we'd love to hear from you! Would you like to find out more about the role, the digital team and what it's like to work at DVLA before you apply? If so, we are organising a familiarisation session where you can virtually 'meet the team' on 22nd May 2025 at 12pm., You'll get to work within one of our Agile Cloud teams building and supporting the platforms for the DVLA's cloud-first applications. Using modern and exciting technologies we are currently rebuilding our services leveraging a cloud-first approach using AWS and Azure technologies. Our delivery squads follow a DevOps model and are responsible for the full life-cycle of their product. As an engineer in one of the Cloud teams, you'll get to work across a wide range of systems and environments. As a team, we're responsible for designing, building, and operating cloud infrastructure on AWS and/or Azure. We're investing constantly invest in our Cloud Platform so our application teams can build scalable, secure, and resilient systems, capable of supporting millions of transactions for UK Citizens. At DVLA you will get to work with a lot of exciting new technology, we get to trial multiple products and choose the best. These are some of the tools and technologies you will be using: + EKS and AWS lambda (nodejs): to run our services. + Orgformation: to manage our AWS landing zone. + Instana: to monitor everything. + ArgoCD: to deploy our applications. + Azure EntraID: for our identities. + Elastic: to ship our logs. + Cloudformation/Terraform: for all of our Infrastructure code. + Pagerduty: to alert. Your responsibilities will include but will not be limited to: + Developing code to meet user needs. + Following best-practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines. + Writing clean, secure and well tested code. + Coaching and mentoring more junior colleagues. + Operating the services they build and identifying issues in production. For further information about the role please see the attached role profile., + Hands on experience of using public Cloud, preferably AWS and/or Azure. + Comfortable using modern CI/CD tooling and a DevOps approach. + Experience with Infrastructure as Code with Cloudformation/Terraform. If invited to interview, this may consist of a range of question types. These could include questions around behaviours and how you would respond in any situation as well as specific examples of things you have done. The selection process will be designed specifically for the role. As a result, your assessment will include:
- an interview and technical questionnaire. Please note that the technical element of the role will be assessed against the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework within Infrastructure Engineer competencies. As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide a CV to Inspire People (our Recruitment Partners) which outlines your experience and suitability for the role (based on the experience points outlined in the essential criteria on this advert). On receipt of your CV, DVLA Hiring Managers will complete a sift. Please note; the sift will be completed on a rolling basis whilst the campaign is still live and so there is potential for feedback to be shared with you (on your application) before the advert closes. If at sift your application is successful, you will be invited to the first stage of the interview process (hosted by Inspire People), where you will be asked to complete a pre-recorded video interview (this again will be based on the experience points outlined in the essential criteria on this advert). If you are successful at this stage, you will be invited to a final stage interview, which will include a technical questionnaire assessment and be conducted by DVLA Hiring Managers. Final stage interviews will take place from 1st July 2025. At the final interview stage, you will be assessed against the skills and behaviours above. This interview will be conducted Video, details of which will be provided, should you be selected for interview. To be successful in this role you will need to have delivered Cloud based services using modern technologies and tools. Have experience working within a team that deals with ambiguity and be familiar with Agile Frameworks. As the successful candidate you will need to be comfortable working with modern CI/CD tooling and a DevOps approach, and to be interested in distributing systems and writing resilient code. You'll also possess experience with Infrastructure as Code with Cloudformation/Terraform.
