Temporary Maternity Cover. Required from September 2025 until the postholder returns to work Part-time, term time only Art and Design is a popular and successful subject at Ipswich School. We inspire our students to go on to study Foundation, Fine Art, Fashion or Textiles, Architecture, Graphic Design and Product Design degrees when they leave. You will provide valuable assistance and support within our Senior School Art and Design Department as part of a team of 5, working closely on a day to day basis with the other Art Technician, our Director of Art and Design and our teaching and support staff to support the smooth running of the department, including preparing materials, assisting with classroom activities, exhibitions and equipment, and some administrative tasks. You will have the opportunity to work in activities that make use of your particular area of expertise. Experience with clay would be an advantage as would knowledge of glazes and finishes. In addition, we would expect candidates to demonstrate aesthetic awareness and a knowledge of art in its broadest sense. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES You must be flexible and willing to undertake a variety of duties working as a member of the team. The following gives you a flavour of some of the main duties and tasks you will undertake for us:
- Stocktaking and ordering of materials, including the handling of invoices, monitoring the department budget and keeping a record of student material charges.
- You will maintain supplies and prepare art, textile and pottery materials as requested.
- Assist with classroom activities, following the direction of the teacher, for example, helping with the use of sewing machines, the printing press and accompanying teachers/pupils on local trips during working hours.
- Provide assistance with the issue of all equipment to staff upon request, and the preparation of teaching aids.
- Assist teachers with curating exhibitions (particularly for students' GCSE and A level work) and be able to put up displays independently around the School. Construct frames and other exhibition material as appropriate.
- Build and construct wooden items used by students (therefore sound knowledge of power and hand tools is essential i.e. jigsaw, mini circular saw and drills etc).
- Assist with administrative tasks (for example, photocopying, filing pupils' work).
- Liaise with other departments (for example School Office, Reception, DT, Catering, Estates).
- Source and supply equipment not available from normal school suppliers.
- Maintain the sewing machines in the department and keep the Textile Room and Photography Room tidy.
- Maintain sinks and work surfaces in a clean and tidy condition.
- Recycle clay for students and teachers and operate the kiln, loading and unloading students' work.
- Clear and dispose of old student work and liaise with parents for upcoming exhibitions and the collection of work.
- Be prepared to undertake appropriate professional training and development activities.
- Inform the Head of Department of any unsafe equipment. HOURS OF WORK You will work for 20 hours per week during Ipswich School term time (35 weeks per annum). There is some flexibility with start and finish times and working days/patterns in this role, which can be discussed at interview with shortlisted candidates, but the hours will need to be worked over four or five days each week (Mondays - Fridays), during lesson times, and they will need to dovetail with the working hours of the other Technician in the department and meet the needs of the department and pupils.
