Full Job Description

The School of Geography and Planning at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a passionate, highly motivated Lecturer in Human Geography, covering a period of maternity leave. The post is part of our continued commitment to be internationally renowned for generating knowledge which empowers change towards sustainable and just futures. We are looking for an outstanding candidate who has:

  • The capacity to deliver high quality and research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in human geography, specifically in the areas of Social/Cultural Geography and/or Geographies of the Global South

Post Reference Number 20228BR, Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules associated with our Human Geography programmes - within the undergraduate and post qualification provision within the School.   • Contribute to module development and delivery, as part of a module team.
  • Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Masters students and/or the co-supervision of PGRs.
  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust.

  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work.
  • Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community.
  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with assessment (setting and marking assessments, moderation of assessments and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University.

  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School's profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.   • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.

    Qualifications and Education Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Human Geography or a related subject area, or relevant industrial experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge of the current status of research in Human Geography, particularly in the areas of:
  • Social Geography
  • Political Geography
  • Cultural Geography; and/or
  • Geographies of the Global South
  • Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the School's teaching programmes.
  • Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others (staff and students) using high level skills and a range of media.
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.

  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Desirable Criteria
  • Fluency in Welsh, oral and written.
  • Relevant professional qualification(s), including higher education teaching certificate(s).
  • Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching activities of the School.
  • A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
