Full Job Description

With the first intake of the North Wales Medical School (Bangor University) having just taken place in September 2024, this is an extraordinarily exciting time to be involved with medical education in the Health Board. Medical education is widely recognised as a vital part of every clinician's role, and an educational qualification provides a strong foundation for a role as future educator. This fellowship offers formal post-graduate training opportunities, provides a wealth of experience in medical education and scope to develop skills mentoring and supervising junior colleagues. As Care of the Elderly (COTE) education fellow, this post is particularly well-suited to doctors who can demonstrate prior commitment to clinical education, who are several years post-foundation programme, and/ or who are in the early stages of their specialty training or shortly to make the transition from core training to specialty training. A regular clinical commitment is expected. This has been designed to provide relevant experience in Geriatric Medicine while enabling time to supervise medical students on placement in the clinical environment. A full-time appointment is expected to involve an approximately 50:50 education: clinical split. Main duties of the job 1. Develop knowledge, skills and experience in teaching and training 2. Gain experience in the assessment of learning and peer review of teaching 3. Gain experience of supervising and mentoring junior clinical colleagues with a commitment to medical education 4. Contribute to the development of novel local teaching 5. Contribute to the scoping and development of new undergraduate educational opportunities and quality improvement 6. Contribute to the organisation and delivery of the local widening access to medicine programme (including the Seren Programme). 7. Fulfil the requirements needed for an educational qualification (e.g. Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Medical Education) and/ or to meet the Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (FHEA) 8. Maintain clinical practice in internal medicine while developing specialist interests in Geriatric medicine, Roles & responsibilities Clinical 1. Assume responsibility for clinical role in care of the elderly medicine, at level commensurate with experience. 2. This activity will ordinarily involve two and a half days per week during normal hours. Education 1. Contribute to placement and clinical supervision of students. 2. Deliver classroom and simulation-based teaching to students in relation to chronic disease specialties and geriatric medicine and other aspects of undergraduate curricula. 3. Mentor of students and junior colleagues involved with medical education. 4. Act as Educational Supervisor for Year 3 or 4 medical students (following appropriate training). 5. Develop teaching resources to be utilised by the clinical school, and work closely with the undergraduate team to evolve novel teaching methods and strategies to benefit the students. 6. Contribute to the coordination and delivery of the widening access to medicine programme (in particular, to guide and support the Academic Foundation year doctors in their efforts). 7. Register for and pursue a post-graduate qualification in medical education (this will be funded by the Undergraduate Department). 8. Help to identify teaching and training opportunities within the acute and community hospitals and channel these resources for the benefit of the students. 9. Undertake education development and quality improvement project activity with the support of the local and wider Medical Education team.
