Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), formed in 2009, is the largest health organisation in Wales and provides a full range of NHS services for a population of around 694,000. BCUHB operates 3 acute general hospitals, 22 community hospitals and a network of over 90 health centres and community clinics and mental health units and coordinates the work of 96 GP practices and NHS dentists, opticians and pharmacies.

As part of Bangor University's commitment to the expansion of medical, pharmaceutical and health sciences, the North Wales Medical School (NWMS) and BCUHB seeks to appoint an individual to a post in Cancer Studies at Clinical Reader or Professorial level, depending on experience. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of cancer research, teaching and leadership within the School and BCUHB, building on the reputation of the North-West Cancer Research Institute (NWCRI) within NWMS and the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre (NWCTC) at BCUHB.

Applicants with an excellent track record in cancer research in medical, clinical or surgical oncology are welcomed. Emphasis will be placed on applicants who complement existing cancer research and clinical practice. NWCRI has well-equipped laboratories with internationally excellent research groups studying the molecular mechanisms underpinning cancer, including cellular responses to DNA damage and impediments to genomic DNA replication. The post-holder will contribute to the development and delivery of teaching within NWMS programmes with a 0.2 FTE commitment with responsibility to the Dean of Medicine.

Candidates should be medically qualified with a higher research degree and extensive research experience, including high impact publications, grant income and collaborations. The post is full-time and permanent, and the successful candidate is expected to commence as soon as practical, subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service check. The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable, but if applicants are not able to speak or write in Welsh, there are many opportunities to learn if they wish to do so.

This academic base will be at NWCRI at Bangor University with a clinical base at BCUHB NWCTC with duties split across the range 60:40% to 40:60% to be agreed on appointment. Through Bangor University's Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some academic time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview. NHS Clinical Duties will include on-call duties proportionate to the shared time allocation agreed.
