Full Job Description

If speculative CVs are sent, no fee will be applicable - please direct all queries to the relevant Resourcing Partner., Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Works Manager plays a key role in the successful delivery of civil engineering projects across the Southern Water framework. You'll provide leadership and support to project teams, helping to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards. Working closely with operational and project delivery teams, you'll contribute throughout the project lifecycle, from early planning and design development through to construction and handover. This role is central to maintaining strong health, safety and environmental performance, driving quality outcomes and supporting continuous improvement across multiple projects. What you'll be doing:
- Report to the Construction Manager on project performance, resource needs and construction risks.
- Support the planning, coordination and delivery of civil engineering activities across the framework.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Site Agents and General Foremen to support successful project delivery.
- Ensure projects have appropriate supervision and resources in place.
- Identify resource gaps and escalate requirements where needed.
- Provide guidance on temporary works throughout ECI, design, construction and handover.
- Support teams in resolving constructability challenges and identifying efficient delivery solutions.
- Review designs, drawings and technical information to ensure buildability and programme requirements are considered.
- Ensure sites are established and maintained in line with Galliford Try and Southern Water standards.
- Attend Health & Safety pre-start meetings with supply chain partners and subcontractors.
- Review supply chain tenders and technical submissions, identifying risks and opportunities.
- Participate in site progress meetings and project reviews.
- Undertake regular site visits to monitor progress and support delivery teams.
- Carry out SHE inspections and audits, including a minimum of one SHE audit per week.
- Support site teams to meet safety, quality and environmental requirements.
- Promote a positive health, safety and environmental culture across all projects.
- Drive quality performance through the application of ITPs, quality checks and BMS procedures.
- Encourage continuous improvement and a "Get It Right First Time" approach.
- Support the achievement of programme, commercial, quality and client objectives.
Experience in a Works Manager, Site Manager, Senior Agent or similar construction leadership role. - Experience delivering civil engineering projects, ideally within the water, utilities or infrastructure sectors.
- Strong understanding of construction methodologies, temporary works and sequencing.
- Experience managing multiple projects or work fronts simultaneously.
- Knowledge of health, safety, environmental and quality requirements within a construction environment.
- Experience reviewing designs, contractor submissions and technical documentation.
- Ability to lead, influence and support multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication, organisation and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with project teams and supply chain partners.
- Proactive, solution-focused approach to problem solving.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery drivers.
- Ability to positively challenge and influence to improve safety, quality and performance.
- Commitment to delivering projects safely, efficiently and right first time.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- SMSTS qualification.
- CSCS card. Desirable
- HNC/HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) qualification.
- National Water Hygiene card.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
- Experience working on Southern Water or other regulated water utility frameworks.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. ICE, CIOB or equivalent).
