Full Job Description

Music is central to the school's ethos, with many pupils involved weekly. The department offers purpose-built facilities and an inclusive environment, alongside a wide-ranging programme of concerts. Pupils benefit from classroom teaching, co-curricular activities, trips and performances, helping them develop confidence, talent and appreciation of others. Music is taught from Year 7 to A Level (Edexcel), with many pupils progressing to university, conservatoires and advanced instrumental exams. The department includes a Director of Music, Assistant Director, teaching staff, Head of Strings, over 30 Visiting Music Teachers and a Music Administrator, supported by a Head of Performance and accompanists. A broad co-curricular programme supports all abilities while challenging the most able. Singing is a key strength: all pupils participate, with around 10% in chapel choirs, who enjoy tours, recordings and performances at major venues. There are also opportunities in contemporary styles, including a cappella groups, concerts and annual musicals. Instrumentalists benefit from a wide range of ensembles, including orchestras, bands and chamber groups, with opportunities to perform alongside professionals. Soloists are supported through lessons, recitals and competitions. Chamber music is thriving, with recent national-level success. Aims:

  • Enrich pupils' lives through varied musical experiences
  • Inspire high-quality performance and excellence
  • Distinctive features:
  • Strongly inclusive approach
  • Particularly rich and varied culture of singing
  • Roles and Responsibilities The College is now seeking to appoint a talented, well-qualified, inspirational musician and teacher, who can communicate to young people a passion and enthusiasm for singing. The teacher will work closely with the Director of Music to nurture the talents of all pupils and abilities through inspirational coaching and teaching. Visiting Music Teachers are required to:
  • Teach pupils, ranging from complete beginners to those of a high standard, the technique and musicianship required to play an appropriate musical instrument, offering encouragement, support and guidance as necessary.
  • Carry out the administrative procedures of the Department.
  • Prepare appropriate pupils for Music Exams.
  • Where appropriate, and in consultation with the Director of Music, organise, promote, rehearse, direct and perform with ensembles.
  • Prepare pupils for concerts, festivals and competitions (as appropriate) and encourage pupils to take the available opportunities to develop all aspects of their musicianship.
  • Assess, record and report as required on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of any pupil they teach.
  • Act in the professional manner of a College teacher, maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety, both when they are authorised to be on the College premises and when they are engaged in authorised College activities elsewhere.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you came into contact.
  • Undertake such training as may be reasonably required by the College to properly adapt to the changing requirements of the College and the role or as may be necessary to fulfil the College's statutory or regulatory obligations.
  • Attend planning meetings and training prior to the start of each academic year.
  • You may be required to undertake such other reasonable duties from time to time as the College may reasonably require.
  • Epsom College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. No job description can fully cover all aspects of the role and consequently the responsibilities are likely to evolve and change over time. This description gives an overall view of the position.
