Role details:

NATS (National Air Traffic Services) are looking for a senior technical authority with strong UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) experience to lead the architecture and technical design of software-intensive, safety-critical systems. The role focuses on big data platforms, API-driven services, and cloud-native architectures supporting UTM/OpenAir capabilities.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong UTM knowledge, including:
    • SORA / UK SORA, JARUS, ASTM F3548, Remote ID, U-space
  • Experience designing API-first systems:
    • REST, event-driven / pub-sub architectures
    • OpenAPI / AsyncAPI standards
  • Proven background with big data and complex datasets, including:
    • Geo-spatial and/or time-series data
    • Data modelling at scale
  • Cloud-native architecture experience:
    • Kubernetes, containerisation, microservices
    • AWS / Azure / GCP
    • Scalable, highly available, multi-region designs
  • Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Ansible or similar)
  • Understanding of safety-critical and regulated environments, including assurance considerations (e.g. CAP670, ED-109A, DO-178C).

Desirable Experience

  • SWIM concepts and aviation data standards
  • Ability to understand geo-spatial / time-series databases (such as PostGIS, TimescaleDB) and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards - both raster and vector formats
  • Advanced API testing and automation
  • Distributed systems and federated architectures
  • Predictive modelling or algorithmic complexity awareness
