Job Plan:

The post will be available from August 2026 until February 2027 and there may be the opportunity to extend the contract. You will form part of a 1 in 7 rota for on call and emergency work. You will work for one of the consultant teams but will be expected to cross cover activities within the department.

We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to join our busy plastic surgery and hand surgery team based at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. Our department delivers a broad and general range of services including: adult and paediatric elective and emergency hand surgery, peripheral nerve injury surgery, breast reconstruction, head and neck surgery, major lower limb trauma, skin cancer, vascular malformations (national referral base), hypospadias, burns, pressure sore and pelvic defect reconstruction, diabetic foot care, spinal cord injuries wound and upper limb care, chest wall reconstruction, and electrochemotherapy. There are existing research links with the regional universities, and a collaborative regional research network. There is a new Academic Surgical Unit being developed across multiple specialties with the support of the Royal College of Surgeons and the University of York.

South Tees Hospitals is one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England and also includes the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. Services are also provided around the region, such as in Redcar, Hartlepool and Stockton. The Friarage site is currently being developed further with a fully-funded new-build surgical elective hub. It has a recently built cancer centre with modern outpatient facilities.

Our Trust also covers a range of highly specialist tertiary services extending to 1.5 million people in Teesside and parts of Cumbria, Durham and North Yorkshire with leading expertise in heart disease, cancer, trauma, neurosciences, renal services and spinal injuries.
