Trainee EMC Engineer

Established in 1972, EMC Hire is the UK's largest specialist rental company for EMC and RF test equipment. From our base in Shefford, Bedfordshire, we support engineers with specialist equipment hire, integrated test systems, EMC test facilities and hands-on engineering support. Our customers work across defence, aerospace, automotive, rail, medical, industrial and commercial electronics. As demand for EMC capability grows, we are looking for a motivated graduate or early-career engineer who wants to build a long-term career in test engineering. This is a hands-on engineering role. • Assist with EMC testing of electronic and electrical products in our Shefford test facilities.
• Learn to set up and operate RF instrumentation, antennas, amplifiers, receivers, spectrum analysers and EMC test software.
• Support radiated and conducted emissions and immunity testing under the guidance of experienced engineers.
• Record, analyse and present test data accurately and consistently.
• Help prepare technical test information, customer documentation and reports.
• Support the maintenance, condition checking and calibration control of specialist test equipment.
• Work with colleagues and customers to understand test requirements and select appropriate equipment or test approaches.
• Build a practical understanding of EMC standards, regulations and test methodologies across different industries.
• Support off-site testing, customer demonstrations and equipment-hire operations when required.
What you'll learn You will be supported by experienced EMC engineers and technicians and will progressively develop the skills needed to work more independently, including:
• EMC fundamentals including emissions, immunity and RF measurement.
• How to configure and operate complete EMC test systems safely and correctly.
• How to interpret results, identify problems and support practical troubleshooting.
• How standards-driven testing differs across commercial, automotive, defence and other specialist sectors.
• How to communicate technical findings clearly to customers and colleagues.
• The practical judgement and confidence needed to progress toward an independent EMC engineering role.
  
  A BEng/BSc (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic or Electromechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• A sound understanding of electrical principles, circuits and signal behaviour.
• A genuine interest in hands-on engineering, testing, measurement and problem-solving.
• An analytical mindset, strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions and learn from experienced colleagues.
• Comfortable IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word; confidence working with data is important.
• A full UK driving licence, as some customer and off-site work may be required.
• Able to satisfy UK security-vetting requirements for defence-related customer projects where required, including SC clearance where applicable.
Desirable - but not required
• University project, placement or laboratory experience involving electronics, RF, communications or test and measurement.
• Familiarity with oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, signal generators or similar laboratory equipment.
• An interest in EMC, RF propagation, electronic system reliability or product compliance.
• Practical experience of building, debugging or testing electronic hardware., This opportunity would suit a recent graduate, or an early-career engineer looking to move into specialist test engineering. You do not need previous EMC experience.
