Full Job Description
Clinical Neurophysiology is a discipline within Healthcare Science which is exciting and dynamic. The Clinical Neurophysiology department diagnoses and monitors conditions affecting the central and peripheral nervous system and eyes such as epilepsy, nerve entrapments and visual disorders. This is done by measuring the electrical activity of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. A range of tests that chart different brain and neurological activities can be conducted to record:
- Electrical impulses in the brain (electroencephalogram)
- Electrical signals passing along nerves in the limbs (nerve conduction studies)
- Electrical activity in muscles (electromyography)
- Response of the optic nerve to light stimulation (visual evoked potentials). The service is supported by Consultant Neurophysiologists, Clinical Scientists and Clinical Physiologists. Most of the work is in providing an outpatient service although we provide an inpatient service for those who require urgent tests. The NHS in Wales is offering 1 salaried post-graduate training programme in Neurophysiology for high-calibre science graduates who are passionate about science and its role in patient care. The Trainee Clinical Scientist will be employed by the host organisation for a fixed term of three years. During this time, they will work through a work-based programme of learning. This will be combined with an academic programme at masters (MSc) level over the three-year period. The first part of the academic programme will introduce the basic science and theoretical background of the rotational disciplines and their application in clinical science within health, as well as providing an introduction to healthcare services and values. The master's degree includes a research project within year 2/3., In conjunction with, and supported by, the designated Training Coordinator/Officer, the Trainee Clinical Scientist will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme. This will include completing the learning outcomes as outlined in the Learning Guides, progressing through a mixture of work-based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments and undertaking the complementary academic master's programme at the designated Higher Education Institution. This is a three-year post-graduate programme, and the successful candidates will be employed by an NHS Wales organisation for the duration of their training and will be based:
