Full Job Description
We are recruiting into a permanent Benign Urology trainee ACP post for an experienced clinician who is already working as band 6 or 7 and would like the opportunity to learn and progress in their clinical and managerial career. We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic and highly motivated to work within the Benign urology nursing service. You will work within an outpatient team of nurses, providing nurse led benign urology clinics and interventions such as lithotripsy for stone patients, men's health, urodynamics and potentially bladder botox and one stop LUTS clinics in the future. You will also play an integral role in developing and supporting relationships within the wider urology team. The main focus of the role will require you to work closely with the other specialist nurses/trainee ACPs in the benign nurse team, as well as working with the Diagnostic ANP, Uro-oncology nursing teams and doctors in the different cancer pathways and diagnostic services. You will not only be performing advanced skilled interventions but you will be using your clinical expertise to interpret your findings, make further requests for other diagnostics, as well as referring on to further practitioners or GPs. This will be done within the structured academic and clinical training of an Advanced Practice Master's Degree (MSc Level 7) There will be an expectation of line management, staff development and further clinical education., The following duties are specific to the Advanced Nurse/Clinical Practitioner role. This is not an exhaustive list. It is unlikely that you will become competent in all these duties; where possible personal interest will be taken into consideration, but service requirements will take priority when deciding your roles within the team. You will receive any training necessary to become competent within the role in keeping with the Band 7 job description, national and local requirements.
- Requesting of radiology diagnostic scans - according to local protocol.
- Lithotripsy - leadership of the day to day running of the lithotripsy nursing service alongside the lithotripsy nurse lead, and providing autonomous clinical care for the treatment of renal and ureteric stones.
- Urodynamics - including the assessment and diagnosis of patients referred for urodynamics and video urodynamics. The service includes both telemed clinics and face to face clinics.
- Men's Health - the assessment and management of erectile dysfunction including injection teaching.
- Bladder botox - assisting with the delivery of the nurse-led bladder botox service and in future potentially further training to deliver the service if undertaking flexible cystoscopy training. Working hours are currently Monday to Friday with and expectation of occasional weekend working., · Practice in compliance with code of professional conduct, being responsible and accountable for their decisions, actions, or omissions at this level of advanced practice · Work towards demonstrating a critical understanding of their broadened level of responsibility and autonomy, recognising the limits of their own competence and scope of practice · Develops own professional judgment skills identifying when to escalate and seek help/guidance, critically reflecting on practice, self-awareness, emotional intelligence and their willingness to change or challenge thought processes · Learn to work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods as appropriate (e.g. history-taking and physical assessments, holistic assessments, identifying risk factors, mental health assessments, requesting/undertaking and/or interpreting diagnostic tests, and conducting health needs assessments). · Develops effective communication skills, supporting people in making decisions, planning care or seeking to make positive health changes, promoting person-centred approaches · Develops effective communication skills with colleagues both internally and/or externally, in verbal, non-verbal and written communication methods, adapting to changing parameters as required; this includes thorough accurate documentation · Provides and receives highly sensitive, complex or contentious information relating to patient care, and communicates information to patients, families or carers with respect, compassion and empathy · Develops proficiency and clinical acumen in relation to decision-making skills, to inform clinical reasoning approaches · Works towards increasing knowledge and skills in advanced clinical practice, in order to initiate, evaluate and modify a range of interventions, which may include the prescribing of medications, therapies, lifestyle advice and care · For registered professionals able to prescribe, in roles requiring therapeutic medications and treatments, and after approval from the Trust's Non-Medical Prescribing Lead, the trainee will undertake the Non-Medical Prescribing Module (NMP V300) as part of the AP MSc pathway, where after the trainee will record the achievement on their regulatory body's professional registration, and prescribe within their scope of practice, utilising local or organisational guidelines, national guidelines, and adhering to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Prescribing Standards, and those of their professional regulatory body (e.g. NMC, HCPC, GPhC or GOC) · Develops professional judgement to manage risk appropriately with support and clinical supervision, especially where there may be complex and unpredictable events, promoting the safety and wellbeing of individuals, families and carers · Begins to act as a clinical role model/advocate for developing and delivering care that is responsive to changing requirements, informed by local service and local population health needs, external agencies and/or wider networks · Demonstrates evidence underpinning subject and service specific capabilities and competencies, relevant to the role's clinical setting and own scope of practice, through the development of a professional portfolio for Advanced Clinical Practice, and in line with the relevant service specific curriculum frameworks or credentials (with NHSE or other professional bodies where relevant). · Works towards developing a range of independent advanced clinical procedures, and request and interpret diagnostic investigations, as required by the service and the scope of practice for the role such as outlined above. - Registered Healthcare Professional
- First level degree in undergraduate base profession
- Supervision, mentoring or facilitating workplace learning qualification
- Consolidated experience in urology or transferrable skills and knowledge
- Knowledge of the key issues in urology benign services
- Experience of clinical governance practices - audit/service evaluation
- Demonstrable evidence of ability to study at Level 7
- Commitment to studying for and completing a full Master's Level 7 AP post-grad degree
- Ability to recognise and analyse complex situations utilising decision making skills to take appropriate action Desirable criteria
