We are seeking to appoint a Teacher of Applied Science on a part-time (0.6 FTE), temporary basis to commence in August 2026. There is also the possibility for the successful candidate to work on a 0.8 FTE basis if able to teach Physics. The role is temporary from 19th August 2026 to 31st August 2027. The role is paid on the Teacher Scale, currently £33,456 - £51,714 per annum FTE. The Applied Science Department consists of 8 members of staff and 3 technicians who share their responsibilities between the Applied Science and A-level Science Departments. The subject area is led by a Subject Leader who reports to the Curriculum Leader for Applied Science and Chemistry. All staff are highly ambitious and committed to providing the best possible experience for students. Staff in the Department work very closely together and there is an excellent team spirit. The College and the Department are justifiably proud of the excellent achievement of students across all Applied Science courses. Value-added performance of the students on Applied Science courses ranks among the best in the country, and students are well-prepared for further study at university, start an apprenticeship or enter the world of employment. The Department is housed in the Science Cluster with access to 7 well equipped laboratories and 5 theory classrooms. All rooms are fully resourced with interactive whiteboards and linked to the College network. There are laptop trolleys and a dedicated computer suite. It is one of the larger departments in the college as well as one of the top performing. The Department currently delivers the following qualifications:
- Level 2 First Award in Principles of Applied Science · Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (equivalent to 1 x A level) and starting this year, AAQ Level 3 BTEC National in Applied Science
- Level 3 Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 x A levels) in Applied Science Staff in the Department actively promote extra-curricular activities to enrich our students' experience at Holy Cross. Enrichment activities in the Department include:
- Trip to a nuclear power station
- Trips to local Universities for practical sessions
- Visits to local museums
- Chess club
- Visiting speakers from Industry and local Universities
- Students studying the Extended Diploma course also complete a week of work experience in the summer term of their lower sixth year. We are seeking to appoint an innovative, enthusiastic and skilled Subject Leader of Applied Science to join our successful team here at Holy Cross, and very much welcome applications from those working in either the school and college sectors. The post is offered as a temporary role on 0.6 FTE, however we could offer 0.8 FTE for candidates able to teach A level Physics, also on a temporary basis.
