Full Job Description
The Physics subject area currently teaches the AQA GCE specification, with approximately 80 students in each year group. The department has a large laboratory and adjacent theory room with interactive whiteboard facilities and a rooftop observatory. Students have the opportunity to extend their work outside class through trips and visits.
In addition, the department contributes to a number of 14-19 science initiatives and has strong links with Manchester University (including providing Initial Teacher Training placements for many years), Lancaster University and UCLan and has contacts at companies such as Rolls Royce and WSP. The department also supports the ethos of the college by involvement in charity work and extra-curricular activities.
The subject area works closely with the other sciences and wider college teams in the college, including the A Level Biology and Chemistry as well as BTEC Applied Science staff.
The subject area has strong results. The enthusiastic team feels that active learning, especially practical work, plays a key role in the teaching and learning strategies within the department and this is supported by a highly qualified technician. The area is well resourced and prides itself both on the quality of its teaching and the support it gives to students. The subject area frequently reviews its teaching and learning strategies, to provide the opportunity for students to maximise their potential and enjoy the subject. This is an integral part of our departmental policy.
We are seeking to appoint a Graduate Teaching Assistant to deliver tuition to accelerate students' educational development and academic skills. This could be alongside teaching staff in the classroom, in small groups or on a one-to-one basis or alternatively by linking with the Learning Support Department.
The subject area and hours are as follows:
· Physics - 18 hours per week (term-time only)
It is essential that applicants are graduates, who have a real passion for their subject, a good level of academic knowledge, and an understanding of how their own specialism relates to other disciplines. They must also have clear and concise communication skills.
The role would particularly suit those considering a career in education, either teaching or supporting learning, and will provide some relevant, paid experience.
This post is temporary, to commence on 7th September 2026 to 9th July 2027.
