Telecoms Technician - Peterborough / Hitchin / King's Cross

A critical part of what we do is the day-to-day upkeep of the rail network. As a Telecoms Technician (known internally at Network Rail as a Technician [General Ops]), youll work outdoors as part of a small, supportive team, carrying out essential faulting and maintenance activities that help keep the railway running safely and reliably for both passengers and freight. Our Telecoms community comes from a variety of different backgrounds, and this might be the first time that you've even considered a career in rail. About the role (External) Role and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: In this role youll be responsible for undertaking and directing inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal work on communications assets, ensuring the railway remains safe, reliable and efficient. Youll carry out work activities on site where required, establishing and maintaining appropriate safety arrangements. All work must be carried out in line with safe systems of work, method statements and relevant standards, with safety always coming first. Youll be accountable for the quality of work delivered, checking that assets comply with standards and that all work is reported accurately. This includes ensuring the vehicles, plant, tools and equipment under your control are fit for purpose and used, stored or disposed of correctly. Our Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, throughout the year, day and night. The role can involve physically demanding work and working close to the operational railway, so being safety-focused, calm under pressure and respectful of rules and procedures is essential. • Shifts Technician roles involve a changing shift pattern including days, nights, and weekends.
• Outdoor working - Our Technician work outside in all weathers and so you'll be comfortable working in different conditions.
• Safe working - offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and passing of the relevant medical assessment and BPSS pre-employment checks. This will include a hearing and eyesight examination.
• Driving - As a Technician, you'll also need a driving licence so you can drive Network Rail vehicles.
  
  Our technicians play a vital role in delivering safe and efficient maintenance of the railway. You dont necessarily need experience from within rail, but you do need to demonstrate transferable skills in the following areas:
• Team-working: Our maintenance teams depend on each other and you'll be able to work closely with the team to deliver safe and efficient work delivery.
• Communication: You'll have good communication skills so you can work safely and effectively.
• Proactive planning: Being punctual, having the van and equipment ready and playing your part within the team are essential to keeping our passengers and freight moving.
• Working under pressure: Working outdoors in all conditions, and with trains passing close by means you'll need to remain calm under pressure.
• Following rules and instructions: It is important that you understand and respect the rules, but also feel confident to challenge if you see a situation is unsafe.
• Willingness to learn: You'll consistently develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline, keeping up to date with new standards, procedures, and instructions.
• Problem Solving: You might not know the answers straight away, but you will be able to think critically to find a way to solve the problems.
• Technical Understanding: You will demonstrate an understanding of inspection, maintenance, faulting and renewal techniques.
