Full Job Description

0.8 FTE (28 hours per week) | Maternity Cover | Up to 1 Year | Battersea, London
The Royal College of Art is the world's leading postgraduate university of art and design, renowned for its creativity, innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Technical Instructor in Moving Image and Sound to join our Technical Services team on a maternity cover contract for up to one year. (Please note the role may end sooner if the substantive post holder returns earlier than expected).
This is an exciting opportunity to support students, researchers and academic staff working across a broad range of creative disciplines. You'll play a key role in delivering expert technical support and guidance in moving image and sound, helping users develop their ideas from concept through to production.
Working as part of a collaborative technical team, you will provide specialist instruction and demonstrations in the use of professional equipment and processes for pre-production, production and post-production. This includes supporting image capture, lighting, sound recording and mixing, editing software, and presentation methods. You'll also contribute to the ongoing development of our sound and moving image facilities, helping to introduce new technologies and maintain industry-standard resources.
You will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation of the Sound and Visual technical spaces, ensuring equipment is maintained to a high standard, and that excellent health and safety practices are followed. The role also involves assisting students and staff in solving technical challenges, contributing to learning resources, supporting exhibitions and events, and helping develop new technical facilities across the College.
We're looking for someone with

+ Experience of sound recording in both studio and location environments, together with sound editing and sound design.
+ Experience working within a filmmaking or moving image environment.
+ Experience delivering practical, in-person technical instruction.
+ Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
+ A collaborative approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a wider technical team.
+ A strong commitment to providing an outstanding user experience.
Experience with lighting, camera operation, video editing and creating online learning materials would be advantageous but is not essential.
If you're passionate about supporting creative practice and enjoy working in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, we'd love to hear from you.
