E.ON UK PLC

Technical Development Technician - Wednesbury

At E.ON, we're not just keeping up with the energy transition, we're leading it. We're a global energy company committed to making the journey to net zero a reality. And to make that happen, we need curious thinkers, practical problem-solvers, and people who embrace technology as a tool for making a difference. We're looking for a Technical Development Technician to join our Product Assurance Team in Wednesbury and help us shape the future of smart energy. You'll be working at the intersection of technology, testing, and innovation, helping ensure that the smart metering equipment and energy solutions we roll out meet the highest standards for quality, safety, and performance.

At E.ON, we value diverse perspectives and fresh ideas. Whether you're from a hands-on engineering background, you've always enjoyed working with gadgets and firmware, or you're someone who learns best by experimenting, this is your chance to turn curiosity into impact. We're after someone who's naturally curious, technically minded, and thrives in an environment where no two days are the same. If you're excited by new technology, hands-on problem-solving, and being part of a cleaner energy future, we'd love to hear from you.

Your day-to-day might include:

  • Testing, evaluating, and learning about new smart meters, firmware, and connected devices.

  • Tinkering with electronics to diagnose faults or push them to their performance limits.

  • Acting as a tech ambassador, raising issues with manufacturers and shaping future product improvements.

  • Creating clear, hands-on documentation and guides for engineers and field teams.

  • Supporting investigations into asset performance to help solve real-world customer problems.

  • Sharing your expertise by helping train colleagues on device use and deployment risks.

Requirements:

  • Confident working with electronic devices, comfortable inspecting, assembling, or debugging hardware.

  • Able to follow structured test plans and accurately record results.

  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and timelines.

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office tools like Word, Excel, and Access.

  • Confident communicator who can engage effectively with both technical specialists and non-technical colleagues.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with smart metering, electrical safety, or device certification.

  • Familiarity with SMETS, GBCS, or Zigbee standards.

  • Scripting or programming experience (Python, LabVIEW, SQL, C/C++).

  • A desire to keep learning, experimenting, and sharing what you discover.

Salary: £31,422 to £43,455
