Full Job Description
The Prison Demand and Release (PDR) Policy Team, which is situated in the Youth Justice and Offender Policy (YJOP) Directorate, is at the heart of plans to help tackle the prison capacity challenge. We work closely with HMPPS, other policy teams and legal and analytical teams. Release policy lead - the role We are seeking a highly motivated and capable policy professional to join the Release Policy team. This is a fast paced, intellectually demanding role and you will provide leadership over a set of complex policy areas, while contributing to the department's response to the prison capacity challenge. You will be joining a supportive, positive, and dedicated team with a strong focus on the wellbeing of team members. Prison release policy is high-profile and sensitive area. It receives consistently strong interest from senior officials, Ministers, and the public; this policy area has been a top priority for MoJ preparing for incoming Ministers in recent weeks. As a G7 team leader, you will help set direction across a demanding portfolio, maintain grip on priority issues, and ensure quality advice is delivered at pace. You will work closely with a wide range of stakeholders, building and sustaining strong relationships with legal, analytical and operational colleagues, and will be relied on to spot opportunities for join-up across the department. You will lead a small team of SEOs and HEOs whose expertise is invaluable to policy making by our team and across the Directorate - supporting them and harnessing that expertise to land key strategic points with Ministers will be key to the role. The Sentencing Act's Progression model, one of the key recommendations from the Independent Sentencing Review, brings in significant changes to how offenders move through their sentence. You will lead on this policy and its application to different criminal offences and sentences during this crucial period as we implement the new model. You and your team will provide policy clarity to operational partners delivering these complex policy changes, and you will advise on the future of existing release schemes as we transition to the new model. This policy area is a fast moving one, so you will need to quickly develop a strong grasp of new subject matter, take a strategic view of emerging risks and opportunities, be proactive in identifying policy work needed, and make effective decisions in an environment of uncertainty. You will work flexibly as new priorities develop and provide leadership across Prison Demand and Release Policy., Using the STAR method can help you give examples of relevant experience that you have. It allows you to set the scene, show what you did, and how you did it, and explain the overall outcome. Situation - Describe the situation you found yourself in. You must describe a specific event or situation. Be sure to give enough detail for the job holder to understand.
- Where are you?
- Who was there with you?
- What had happened? Task - The job holder will want to understand what you tried to achieve from the situation you found yourself in.
- What was the task that you had to complete and why?
- What did you have to achieve? Actions - What did you do? The job holder will be looking for information on what you did, how you did it and why. Keep the focus on you. What specific steps did you take and what was your contribution? Remember to include how you did it, and the behaviours you used. Try to use "I" rather than "we" to explain your actions that lead to the result. Be careful not to take credit for something that you did not do. Results - Don't be shy about taking credit for your behaviour. Quote specific facts and figures. Explain how the outcome benefitted the organisation or your area. Make the outcomes easily understandable.
- What results did the actions produce?
- What did you achieve through your actions and did you meet your goals?
- Was it a successful outcome? If not, what did you learn from the experience? Keep the situation and task parts brief. Concentrate on the action and the result. If the result was not entirely successful describe what you learned from this and what you would do differently next time. Make sure you focus on your strengths.
