Teacher of the Deaf

As a Teacher of the Deaf, you will work collaboratively with children and young people, families, educational settings and multi-agency professionals to ensure effective access to learning and inclusion. As a Teacher of the Deaf, you will be an integral part of this collaborative network, ensuring that children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing receive timely, specialist support that enables them to participate fully in education and community life.,

• Provide specialist educational support and advice for children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing from early years through to further education.
• Assess the impact of deafness on learning, communication, social development and access to the curriculum.
• Develop, implement and review individual programmes of support.
• Work in partnership with families to promote positive outcomes and independence.
• Advise and train school staff on effective strategies, reasonable adjustments and inclusive practice.
• Support educational settings to create deaf-friendly learning environments.
• Monitor and evaluate progress, contributing to Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments and annual reviews where appropriate.
• Liaise with health, social care and voluntary sector professionals to ensure coordinated support.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement and professional learning activities.

  Are you a qualified Teacher of the Deaf who is passionate about enabling children and young people with who are deaf or hard of hearing to thrive academically, socially and emotionally? (Applications will also be considered from those who are currently undertaking the ToD mandatory qualification or outstanding class teachers who are willing to commit to the 2 year TOD mandatory qualification course), Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• Mandatory Qualification in Deaf Education (MQ) or willingness to obtain it
• BSL Level 3 - or working towards.
• Experience of working with children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings.
• Strong understanding of deafness and its impact on communication and language development, learning, and social and emotional development.
• Knowledge of current SEND legislation and inclusive educational practice.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and partnership-working skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload across a geographical area.
• Full driving licence and access to a vehicle for travel across Devon.
This role involves travel across Devon, so access to a car is essential. This post requires an Enhanced DBS check.
