Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages (German)

Shrewsbury School is seeking a full-time Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) able to teach German. The ability to teach either French or Spanish as a second language is an advantage.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent teaching at all levels in the School and will have energy and enthusiasm for language learning and culture. The post could suit either a teacher new to the profession or an experienced teacher seeking to widen their experience, with the possibility of taking on additional responsibilities within the Faculty.

MFL is a highly successful faculty, with strong pupil numbers and a track record of excellent Public Examinations results. Pupils choose between five classical and modern languages in their first year (Year 9), with many taking at least one to take forward for GCSE. Large numbers of pupils go on to take Spanish, French or German in the Sixth Form, including a number of dual linguists. Many of those pupils then go on to read Modern Languages at university, including at Oxford and Cambridge.

Language residentials remain an established part of annual trips for pupils. There are seven full-time teachers of MFL, most of whom teach more than one language in a friendly and collaborative working environment, accommodated in a spacious area within the Main School Building. They are supported by specialist Language Assistants who are native speakers. The Faculty is well-resourced with the latest learning technology, and all teachers are issued with a laptop device and have access to extensive professional development opportunities.

A full induction programme is provided for all new members of staff, in addition to a programme of continuous professional development as well as the opportunity to be involved in wider pastoral and co-curricular duties as part of the opportunity to fully embrace the benefits of working in a boarding school environment.
