Full Job Description

Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the South West, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18. The School is looking to appoint a teacher of Mathematics from September 2026 and welcomes applications from a well-qualified and enthusiastic Mathematics graduate. The successful candidate will join our thriving department and teach across the 11-18 age range. The role is maternity cover, expected to run until the end of June/early July 2027, subject to the return of the postholder from maternity leave. The role may be up to full time, but may also be offered on a part-time basis, with the opportunity to teach alongside other staff if preferred. Please indicate clearly on your application whether you would prefer a full-time or part-time role, and the range over which you would be available. Applicants will hold a degree-level qualification relevant to the subject area and suitable teaching qualifications (PGCE / BEd.). This role would suit an NQT or a more experienced applicant. Specific qualifications, experience and/or training should be made clear on your application, and all will be advantageous in the application process. At present there are twelve mathematics teachers in the department, some of whom are full time and others part time. All KS4 pupils study for the Edexcel IGCSE examination. The department normally achieves 100% 9 to 4 grades. In 2025, 86% of pupils gained a 6 grade or above and 94% of pupils gained grades 9 - 5. Our top two GCSE sets also have the opportunity to sit AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics alongside the IGCSE. In the sixth form, we offer the Edexcel A Level mathematics and further mathematics courses. In 2025, 50% of our A Level mathematics grades were A

  • -A and the overall pass rate was 100%. Pupils are often prepared successfully for entry to Oxford or Cambridge and to competitive courses at Russell Group universities. We currently have two further maths sets in both L6 and U6.
  • Each year many pupils at all levels in the school take part in mathematics competitions, both local and national, including the Junior, Intermediate and National Mathematics Challenge, with some going forward to national events. The mathematics department uses ICT widely within its teaching. All staff and pupils in years 7 to 11 have school-managed iPads whilst sixth form pupils have their own laptops or tablets. The role will attract a competitive salary as well as generous benefits including employer pension contribution, free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking, discretionary staff discount on school fees and use of indoor swimming pool and fitness suite. The final closing date for applications is Tuesday 5 May 2026, 9.00am and interviews held w/c 11 May 2026 (at the latest). However, we will be assessing applications as they are received and will close the role earlier than this date if an appointment is made. Applications must include a completed Exeter School application form. For safeguarding purposes, a CV alone is not sufficient. To arrange a discussion about the role please contact hr@exeterschool.org.uk. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply before the deadline as applicants will be reviewed as soon as applications are received. Exeter School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from any appropriately qualified person. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. Employment is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references provided specifically for this post and addressed to the school, and to satisfactory DBS clearance.
